Panasonic refuses to fix couple's broken £800 42-inch flat-screen TV because they each smoke 20 cigs/day www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3535536/Panasonic-refuse-fix-couple-s-broken-800-42-inch-flat-screen-TV-smoke-20-cigarettes-day.htmlThey don't explain whats happened really as regards this lump of silicon and plastics. I know that cheap Double Glazing plastics can discolour toward yellow/orange and includes cooking smoke/vapour/dust and smoking. I am not convinced its smoking only though? Interesting because they gave no warning in manuals. Gunge from smoking is one thing but I notice that vaping leaves a scum on the bottom of windows and fast. Might niff of cheesecake, custard or mint whatever? Never sure this stuff is worth repair anyway? Check your TV docs for cheescake or custard pongs.

funny though how the problem has only been reported on a Panasonic tv.
I would of expected it to show up on a multitude of products if the claim were true, I don't recall my monitor ever suffering from shadowing in the 5 year period it sat on my desk while I puffed away relentlessly in front of it (in an outbuilding not in the house) indeed it still has a clear picture even though its been repurposed into one of the kids desktops a few years back and its now an 8 year old lcd screen (cheap as chips thing I picked up on a sale out lasted the 2 pc's it was plugged into)
maybe its the poor build quality of Panasonic products that's caused the problem, coupled with their poor customer service position .....
I do recall a sony rep telling me that I shouldn't buy Panasonic screens because they weren't edge sealed and that would cause problems over time, so glad I opted for a less cheap Samsung tele (which is still working perfectly even though its an 09 vintage)
who knows maybe that sony rep did me a gigantic favour by giving me some insider information despite trying ot flog me a vastly overpriced underperforming bravia tv (I had one of the earlier models and the degredation in picture quality over time was huge in the 2 years before I gave it away)

I don't know if there's any truth in the matter but a TV engineer told me that all flat screens only come from a few companies. LG being the biggest supplier. Probably makes sense as like our battery manufactures there's only a few, the rest being re-wraps.

Probably makes sense as like our battery manufactures there's only a few, the rest being re-wraps. Thought that was Samsung as the prime manufacturer mainly. Everybody else gets seconds? Anyway, think Samsung have stolen the whole market largely. The surprise to me is that Sony is loosing on its TV business...the one LCD I had was semi cr*p. Their CRT TVs were the best/reliable...first out of the box. Trouble is there's not much to watch after the 10th round of repeats..so should last a long time?

We are looking at either a Samsung or LG, possibly curved, no where near that price though lol.

don't get a curved screen the pic is hard to watch as unless you sit in the right spot diff bits are at diff distances causing focusing probs and it you think refection probs are a pain with flat screen(ie windows ect)just wait till you got a curved one at one point before the floods lg were supplying about 80% of the lcd panels in all tv,s with sony/samsug and a few others using them in all but there flagship range for which they made there own

I like my LG plasma I think it is. I can't justify buying a £4k tv, not that I have that sort of money anyway but picture was brilliant!

Sounds like Panasonic trying to pull a fast one to me. If the amount of nicotine entering the back of the TV causes that sort of damage, then I would say they have a case of not fit for purpose. If I were them I would speak to a lawyer.

I remember a while ago one of the guys in an IT team showed me the inside of a PC that had been used by a heavy smoker (in the days you could still smoke at your desk) It was pretty disgusting. There was a layer of brown residue over much of the inside, some of it quite thick.. At the time quite a few PC repairers refused (or charged more) to mend computers owned by smokers because of the state of the interior.
