Having been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic just over a month ago and starting get my head around the lifestyle changes I have to make, I have joined a forum and probably learnt more from the members on there than from my GP/Nurse. Anyway the question I was going to ask is there any members on here who are diabetic ?. Who I could maybe ask advice from.

Sorry I don't have diabetes but I have searched the net in the past about vapers and diabetes. From what I've seen vaping hasn't affected them. Good luck anyway

Hi wil7985, Yes, ask away as with above, I have been type 2 for a long time now. Basically I control it by the use of Metformin, but diet and weight has a big influence on control too. I attend a Diabetic Clinic every 6 months and this keeps "my excesses" in check. As to avoiding certain types of foods, well I don't hold by that sort of thing. Each of us are different and you and your Diabetic Clinic will eventually come to understanding your own levels and foods to suit you. The best advice I can give you is to be honest with yourself and your diabetic team in finding a safe blood/sugar level that you are happy with.

I am on metformin also, have lost 10lbs in the last three weeks by changing my diet, I'm doing blood/sugar test and seem to be averaging between 5/7.5 count at the moment although the other morning my count dropped down to 2.1, don't know why but boy did I feel rough I've a lot to learn I think.

I am not an expert - what I write is based on experience and research
please ask your doctor to be referred to a diabetes specialist - as said above everybody is different and you want the right medication right from the beginning - some diabetic 2s don't even need medication
the 2 main taste carriers in food are fat and sugar - in the 70 an American doctor claimed without any clinical trials that fat is bad - he got that so wrong ! fat is good - sugar is bad - the one ingredient in your diet you really don't need is sugar ( btw everything in moderation - a small piece of cake now and again won't harm you , if the rest of your diet is healthy )
make it a rule and a habit to check everything you buy on it's sugar content and please stay away from everything 'light' - it's shocking how much sugar is in this stuff .
also avoid to eat too many carbs - don't know, if you have heard of the so called Scandinavian diet : it's based on low carb - high fat - and certainly worth looking into it - the more we stick to it - the better hubbys blood sugar level is

The diet Clivia described above is what I prescribe to. Ive lost 2.5 stone asks have a little way to go but my levels are usually in the 7.5 range and lower and i am able to consume a small amount of carbs. Vaping doesn't effect my test results and I've tried with a wide range of juices and it doesn't seem to have an impact

Mate its a never ending learning curve ok i don't know to much about type 2 but for me its all about a balance of food vrs work/exercise. The problem i have is you get into a routine of how much insulin to take for the normal day, but then when the day isn't normal say you do a bit more manual work than normal it will pull your level right down and if its a lazy day they will get high. Hopefully you will get to know when things arn't right and be able to sort yourself out before it gets out of hand and you have a hypo. Just make sure you have dexto sweets on you at all times !!!! put packets in the car in your work place by your bed even leave some round your mates house. That way if you do have a turn you can pick yourself up quickly , don't be tempted to use choc bars as a pick me up as yes they will put sugar back in you quickly but then later it will cause you to drop really quick again. Also be more concerned about going low than going high yes both high n low is bad for you but go low and you will be on the floor out cold go high and yes you will feel crap but you can still function for a while so you can get back in control.

Hi wil7985, Please understand some basics here. First off, while it is interesting to read some of the folks experiences on here, this is primarily a Vaping Forum and not a Diabetic Forum. Secondly, I do not know whether you are 7 foot 4 inches and weighing in at 10 stone, or 4 foot 11 inches with your hands in the air and weighing in at 27 stone. So there is no way that I can advise you on what you should be eating and what you should be avoiding. The ONLY people who are qualified to advise you in any way will be the practitioners at a Diabetic Clinic. Every 6 months, as well as having my blood and urine checked, I am weighed, advised and, if necessary, have a session with a Dietician who is part of that clinic. Now it could be that a simple change of diet and/or exercise may be enough to bring your blood/sugar levels to a reasonable level without the need for medication, or it could be that you will need some form of medication initially but not permanently, however only the Diabetic Practitioners will be able to guide you on this. As stated previously, I have been diabetic type two for a long time. My wife is also diabetic type two and my father was diagnosed diabetic at the age of 84!!!! My wife eats all these "none sugar" sweets but they give me the runs and I avoid them like the plague. Mars Bars are my weakness!!! Her average Blood/Sugar is 7.5, mine is 6.2. (one up for Mars Bars then!!!). Joking aside, get to that clinic and get yourself sorted.
