Cheers Postmodern Smoking So it looks like grow your own tobacco might be common place soon Extraction would be the problem .... without suitable lab equipment and knowledge! May come a time that you need to befriend our resident chemist *-SARIN-* ! Tobacco is a hardy plant that will grow in nearly all soil types apparently. One odd fact is that the darker the soil the darker the tobacco, the lighter the soil the lighter the tobacco However it grows best in warm dry conditions (looks like the UK might not be the best place?) With regards to extraction, the high yield process uses an acid base reaction and requires Hydrochloric acid and benzene, neither of which you will find on the shelf at Tesco! Another way requires a bit more knowledge and some lab equipment, specifically a vacuum filter and some rather nasty solvents (Toluene or Xylene). This will give you the Nicotine salt (not what you want). To get the freebase nicotine which is required then you would need to react the nicotine salt with a base such as sodium hydroxide (lye) - again another nasty chemical, you stick this down drains to clear them out! The complete process is a bit more laboured and i have intentionally left some key phases out so that people cannot kill themselves Most Nicotine these days is synthetically made as it is more commercially viable and quicker.
