Pretty chuffed with my little experiment making my own Clapton wire. Nichrome 80 (26awg) and Kanthal (32awg) The pic below is the final one I made, each getting better every time attempted, if your thinking of making your own it's a lot easier than I expected, I never used anything other than a cordless drill, and fingers to guide.

Looks great. Quick queshun. Why did you use the nichrome for the core? Is that the correct method? I just banged mine out of 2 different diameters of A1 as it was all I had.

Nichrome for both for me, love the flavour with the stuff. Seen a number of people use kanthal core and nich wrap but haven't tried that one yet myself

Having tried other methods, I honestly find guiding the wire between my thumb and index finger the easiest. Good job!

well done, no voodoo involved in making your own Clapton wire.

Thanks mikedidthis, my first one ended up getting scrapped as it overlapped, second was a lot better but slack in places so I did manage to compress the Kanthal and get at least one coil out of it , and the above was the fourth.

Its quite a good feeling when you get the speed and tension right as the 32g just wraps itself down the core. More non-smoking therapy to keep your hands busy

made from a 20ml syringe, I was looking for some old brass stove jets for the guide but the needle works fine.
