I know what your saying Doc, and yes of course education is important and i for one wish i had worked alot harder at school. But hindsight is a wonderful thing. This is only one PE lesson which was making her feel uncomfortable, surely the school should be doing something to address these issues If her lesson is at the end of the day then all she will be worried about is that and not concentrating on her other lessons. Oh my lord i'v just remembered the communal showers Where the PE teacher would stand and watch ???

Agreed the school should be addressing any bullying issues - if the staff have been told about these problems and nt done anything about it then go to the Head. If they haven't been told tell them. I'm not trying to tell anyone off in this thread I am just passionate about education. Cheers, DocVape

I avidly avoided doing PE in secondary school from aged 14 quite successfully. I was however cycling everywhere and after I left school continued cycling but then started canoeing, rock climbing, swimming, and many other activities. It wasn't I didn't want a complete lack of activity, I just found PE at school to be pointless tedium.
I know physical activity is important but it must be said not enough is done to find out what physical activitites a particular child enjoys. Making all kids do stuff they hate is just stupid.

I pulled my son out of PE. He has dyspraxia. I had an OT from CAMHs go in and assess what was happening. He was great and gave the PE teachers loads of great advice. Did the PE teachers take one word of it on board? No! Missing PE was a small price to pay for my son to be happy and relaxed in the rest of his classes. There still seems to be an abundance of PE teachers who trained when dinasaurs walked the earth. Tthey do not have the time or patience to teach the less able children in a PE class. In my experience not all the bullying of my son was the other children but the teachers themselves

Couldn't agree more. It's also counterproductive and puts kids off trying other physical activities that they may enjoy/be good at!

If I catch my children play truant, they are going to wish they hadn't. Been there, done that and know where it can lead. Not a chance in hell, no matter how big or small, it all starts somewhere!

Do as i say,not as i do then. So teaching double standards and that bullying is ok,but standing up for yourself isnt? Would love to know what you would do to them to make them not play truant then?

Double standards my ****, They don't even know what I got up to, have no reason to, and never will. Would you tell a murderer that he had double standards for teaching his children that it is wrong? Truancy is not defending your self, it's running away from the problem, and its also breaking the law. Standing up to the bullies is defending yourself. Every journey starts with a single step, and it's my responsibility as a parent, at their young age, to guide them onto the right path. Truancy, whilst it is a small step, is a step in the wrong direction, and could be the first step down a very bad path. That's my opinion, and how I intend to bring up my children, only you know your family, and it's up to you how you bring up yours.

I was brought up 'properly'. My parents were middle class, I was taught good manners and to respect my elders. That didn't stop me detesting P.E. and and all kinds of sports though and I dreaded the annual sports day. When I reached my teens, I skived off school many a time, unbeknown to my parents and I used to smoke behind the bikeshed. There's some things parents have no control over, no matter how well you've been brought up and it's all part of growing up.

Aaah them were the days , the days from hell !!! I hated my grammar school and pretty much skived the last 2 years. I think the point being is that truancy is a big warning sign of serious under lying problems whether it is being bulled or other things. In my case I needed serious help these years were the start of my depression due to family problems . I was properly diagnosed until 3 years ago at the age of 29 ! Instead of passing heavy judgement it is our duty as parents to get the help and support kids playing truant need . I have missed out on much of my adult life because little was done back then I for one would take it very seriously if my child was playing truant and i would get to the bottom of the why rather than focusing on the truancy it's self !
