Not good news for ex smokers, regardless of how long ago you quit !! Smoking Permanently Damages Your DNA !Smoking scars DNA in clear patterns, researchers reported Tuesday. Most of the damage fades over time, they found — but not all of it. Their study of 16,000 people found that while most of the disease-causing genetic footprints left by smoking fade after five years if people quit, some appear to stay there forever.

Honestly . . . . I'm not entirely surprised considering how damaging smoking is to our bodies and health - we all knew the risks we were taking. But any damage limitation can only be considered a positive to me. When smoking rates are falling substantially - thanks in no small part to the efficacy of ecigs, the focus should be on this news in my humble. As an aside ( let alone the damage to our health ) I happened to have occasion to serve a customer with cigarettes, £8.37 for a pack of 19 L&B!!!

But any damage limitation can only be considered a positive to me. That's my view too. I think this is really good news. I knew I was at far higher risk of falling to something very bad as a result of my long term heavy smoking. That this study (amongst others) shows I've now significantly reduced my risk of falling ill is a good thing. I'm not really surprised that, no matter how long I'm off 'em, there remains some residue risk. With all the toxins I was consuming, frankly, it's a bit of a wonder I lasted this long.

From this price listing: linky a regular common brand 25 pack (Winfield) is close to $30 Aussie. Money converter here linky suggests that's near 17 Pounds Stirling. We have several more annual tax hikes on tobacco yet to be implimented. As you say Yikes. I am very thankful I found vaping.

I guess negative always sells, but to me there is a massive positive being stated in the article. They say smoking causes damage to 7000 genes but quitting smoking reduces that to just 19. I think I can live with the 99.7% reduction in the odds. Even some of the remaining damaged genes may be the result of other environmental causes, such as air pollution which cannot be easily avoided.

At the going rate, I have saved £27,046.70.
Me thinks I had better confiscate Mrs Lobey's bank card 'cause she is definitely spending more than she should be.

Well, if they are going to be that doom and gloom about it, I may as well take up smoking again. (no, not really)... ..but it does present a very negative picture. I guess we all suspected you'd never get away with it 100%, but where's the encouraging comments? "It's always worth quitting" and if e-cigarettes are the only option, take it!

Just done the maths on my past cigarette spending habit Lobey, on a good week I'd chug through 300 - which at those prices as I never did rollies, comes in at a purse busting, cancer inducing £132.15 a week!!! Makes you stop and think . . . . and yet again rejoice for the brilliant option we all use and enjoy.

Yes Perpetua, Mine, going on what the prices were when I stopped (£5.50 for 20 Super King) I am saving about £105 a week. Ofcourse, on top of that was the "wee extras" I would buy each day when I went into the Village Store for my ciggies. Really it was only when I saw the amount of money that was going into, and staying, in the Bank, that I realised just what smoking had been costing me. Although it would have greatly helped my health if vaping had come along 30 or 40 years ago, in many ways I am glad that I was retired and dependant on my pension before I found vaping. I now have a 5k+ a year pension boost and that makes the world of a difference between what we thought we could afford and how we now live. Vaping is so much more than just a healthier lifestyle.

I think we all feel that way Lobey, the money we could have put aside/spent on something more worthwhile . . . . still better late than never for us. Vaping is so much more than just a healthier lifestyle. Amen to that.

I dread to think what I have spent in the 45 years of smoking. I always knew it was a financial drain, but I always justified it by saying I enjoyed smoking, which if I'm honest I did. Now I enjoy vaping at a 10th of the cost. Whatever they do to vaping, I will find a way to circumvent the regulations/laws etc. They could however ban tobacco and I would rejoice, now that I am a vaper.

Sorry peeps, I didnt post it to promote doom & gloom, but alot of stuff that I've read about quitting kinda implied that after a year or so the damage youd done to your body from smoking was virtually reversed & i'd never seen anything that said it affected our DNA ! I kinda saw it as a slightly positive thing too, I'm hoping it will encourage more people to give up & maybe even stop some from even starting in the first place

I've always been aware that the time frame for significant ' reversal ' of any damage was longer than a year markus . . . . I guess for those of us who smoked for decades this is especially true. Not all the facts are relevant to vapers who take nicotine in their vapes obviously, but there's no harm in reminding ourselves of the benefits and improvements we'll be able to enjoy. whyquit.com/whyquit/A_Benefits_Time_Table.html
