We were on a water meter a couple of years ago when there was just me and my mum living together and it saved us a lot of money as we were also quite frugal with what we used. We only had ensuite showers so no baths, my mum only drinks bottled sparkling water and we had no dishwasher etc plus with there only being the two of us there was very little washing up anyway and we only did a few washing machine loads a week. Now we've got my little brother (I say little, he's 20 but acts 12 lol) and he wears 3 sets of clothes a day, showers for 45 mins!! We have to to loads of extra washing etc so we are not on a meter anymore, it would cost us a fortune!

martin lewis says, if there are less people in the house than there are bedrooms then get a water meter, don't see how that works, as our bedrooms don't use any water Guess it applys to people with water beds though. It's the way I tell them, Lol.

In Scotland you pay a fixed charge along with your Council Tax, which is based on things, including how many bedrooms you have

I'm on a water meter as well Sandra, through choice as it's considerably cheaper for me living alone to have one . . . on average my bills are £200.00 a year . . . it does also teach you to be sparing with your water consumption which is no bad thing. My next door neighbour's unmetered supply costs them almost £600.00 a year in comparison . . . although they are a family of 4 and Karen has the washing machine on night & day with 2 boys. When I had my shop . . . going back 20 years ago, I paid to have a metered supply and bills dropped from some £550 per annum, to £56!!!!!!!!!!!! The first years savings almost paid for the plumbing work! It's been absolutely piddling it down all day here today as well . . . no surprise, we've almost sold out of wellies. Don't even get me started on the refuse collection arrangements, I'm fed up clearing up plastic/cardboard on bin days that's blown all over the place because the current receptacles provided are completely inadequate.
