Had a quick check on youtube and this is where it all got a bit confusing.

Think I would tend to go with the first video, unless of course I've missed something and these boxes are not the same or, does it really matter what way the battery is inserted ?

from what I recall, mech mods can have battery inserted either way, as all its doing is completing a circuit/connection when you press fire button to get power

Correct but with reservations Pepperty mechs are just making a connection as you say but still need to be very careful if inserting upside down making sure that the insulator has no damage (pos & neg at the same end).
It is always recommended to have the batteries '+' end up

IMO its always best to have the dangerous end (+) not pointing at your face if you have an option.

My only mech is positive up, and my regulated squonkers -  in fact almost all my regulated mods have plus up but my vaporsharks have plus (positive) facing down, my billet boxes for example. I'm over cautious as my first replaceable battery mods were vaporshark dna30's and if battery goes in wrong way it fried the chip! 

Battery fitment in my billet boxes is really tight fit and its easy to tear the wrap and I've had to re-wrap a few batteries. The other thing I did was a cellotape 'tab' around to give me something to pull on! But the first BB I thought was broke as I'd put battery in wrong way!   almost had a heart attack..

The Frankenskull has the positive on the bottom, nothing on the boxer to indicate either way.

hmm, thinking on, my mech rockmodz would probably be safer if I swap the battery round and put positive down - I just hadn't thought about battery safety until I read this thread --- as you say - if its going to implode/explode I'd want it going thermal downwards and not to my face!

...which would also mean I'd need to rewrap as the 'incredible hulk' would be upside down!!!   couldnt live with that.....

As said if the battery wrapper is in good condition then it doesn't matter which way round the battery is installed in a mech. One thing to consider though from a safety perspective, if you have a damaged wrap and negative pointing down then the mod case is negative assuming contact between battery case and mod so your mod would be continually firing without pressing the fire button and whilst thus is not great at least the current and heat is limited somewhat by the coil resistance and if the coil burnt out the current flow would stop.

If the battery positive is pointing down making the mod case positive and you had the same battery wrap damage you've now got a dead short of the battery as soon as you hit the fire button limited only by the resistance of the metal tube, the switch ccontact and the tube to battery case resistance. Also given the high current it's likely the switch would weld closed during this fault condition.

So all things considered I'd always have positive up and connected to the atty and negative to the mod body, if I vaped of course

Buy 2.. put the + up in one and the + down in the other. Then your sorted!
