So much info missing from the story. Very sad and shocking. Still not bad considering how many fags have killed people...

Just read a post on FB (the home of the truth.....) and it says the offending device was a mech mod rather than a vape pen.
Either or it's still tragic for the victim and I'm sure something that the anti-vaping (or pro-smoking...) lobbyists will use to bash other vapers with.

While it's certainly a tragic and very sad ending for this gentleman . . . . as per usual certain elements of the media love nothing better than to sensationalize an ecig related story such as this one - the actual facts of how this dreadful incident occurred, don't regrettably even enter in to it. If you use mechanical, unregulated devices then it is imperative to fully acquaint yourself of how they can be used safely, which it would appear did not happen in this case - personally, I don't understand how he failed to notice the device getting hot, really hot for it to explode.

Its got to be the same as trying to fill the car fuel tank while holding a burning candle and being surprised when anything untoward happens

Disappointing reaction IMO, some poor sod died leaving bereaved loved ones, maybe kids, did they deserve it because they hadn't read up on battery safety or got a cheap knock off mod or battery? None of us knew about the risks using Li batteries when we started, lucky for us we are a bit wiser now, unfortunately some take the opportunity to be smug although they knew nothing when they started. Vapers need to grow up, bad vendors and manufactures need to be eradicated and as a group we should try to help people be safe (difficult I know) and not just complain when they die from ignorance or bad luck.

Good points, but if a battery goes into thermal runaway it is fast and I would not expect people to get a 30 second warning.

About 8000 people die per hour. If we are indifferent to 7999, then we are entitled to be so for this one.
