Hi guys. Just wondered if anyone could offer any advice. Everytime my computer performs the windows updates, it is always the same one. It happens everytime I log out i.e. 2-3 times a day and the particular update is "Security Update for Microsoft Works 9 (KB2680317) and this is the only update performed since 15 May. I've tried this: support.microsoft.com/kb/910339but it made no difference. It's a real pain and I don't understand why it's the same update time and time again. I'm using Firefox with Windows 7. Thanks for your help and please keep any information in complete laymans terms as I'm defunct in computer technology. Oh and it is a licensed version of Windows that I'm using.

Poppsie is it a registered version of Works or was it a trial that came with the PC?

The strange thing is, I've had the laptop for over two years and the updates have been fine. This problem seems to coincide with changing to Firefox from IE9, which I can't see would make any difference......

I'm sure that installing Firefox was a coincidence. I would do what others have suggested - uninstall Works, reboot. Reinstall Works, reboot. Then reapply the patches from Windows Update. To be honest, I thought you were going to mention the good old .Net updates which always present issues, particularly on XP. Glad I was wrong.

I had this problem before with vista. Windows update just completely stopped working all of a sudden. Try to run a diskcheck to check for disk errors. It could be sitting on a bad sector.
In 7 it's...
Start > computer > right click on the hard drive and choose 'properties' > click the 'tools' tab > choose the 'check now' under 'error checking'
I had no luck doing that unfortunately and eventually decided just to reinstall vista completely which did fix the problem. I think vista updates are a lot worse than windows 7 ones. I can't tell you how often I had to fix errors because of the updater deciding to break on me.
Are you still getting new updates? Mine completely broke and I wouldn't get any new updates and it would constantly ask me to install the same one over and over which was a little annoying.

Hi leftfield I haven't had any new updates for quite a while now. It just keeps installing the same update every single time I log off which means I have to wait while it does it and like you say, it is a pain. I really dont want to uninstall and reinstall Windows7 I'm sure I'd get in a mess and lose data. Maybe I need to get someone to look at it for me which unfortunately will mean being without my laptop for a week or more. Its just such a pain.

Chrissie, just had a look at that link (thanks). I noticed it says for the update that won't upload (mine appears to be) but I fiddled around anyway. It appears that works 9 is not on my computer (it won't open, just says removed or renamed and needs to be reinstalled). I think to reinstall it, I need to totally uninstall windows7 and reload as I think its contained in microsoft office. Can only say I'd be terrified to even try that LOL. So it might be that this update keeps appearing a hundred times a day because it can't update something that isnt there (if that makes sense). Right now I'd kill to be a computer whiz kid..............(scratches head and sighs)..

OK, it just occurred to me that the update machinery still thinks Works is there, even though your computer doesn't. It may be there are still some files left behind. Try going to control panel and 'uninstall programs' and see if it still lists Works. If it does, uninstall it from there and it will remove whatever remnants are left then hopefully update will stop trying to update something that isn't there.

OK, just tried that but it's not showing works as being installed.
