Interesting Macca, although I can't quite decide how I feel about this.

If it keeps the next generation from getting addicted, I would welcome it with open arms and I suppose it gives a choice to those who really want to quit nicotine but find themselves unable to do so.
I suspect the tobacco industry will be out to prove that it causes brain damage or something...

Just read the article and I think it's fantastic news. The mice round here leave dog-ends all over the place.

I suspect the tobacco industry will be out to prove that it causes brain damage or something... The tobacco industry don't accept that nicotine is addictive and the scientific evidence supports that view. I tend to the view that it's the MOAI-like tobacco alkoids that supply the pleasure and the addiction. The vaccine seems to be another symptom of the wilful ignorance that pervades the anti-smoking establishment.

Hmm, nicotine receptors occur naturally in the body and I'm sure they are there for a reason. I wonder if in the long run, turning them off would do more harm than good. Besides, nicotine itself isn't that bad, it is smoking tobacco as a delivery mechanism that is the harmful bit. Vaccines seem like the latest wheeze for big pharma to sell lots of drugs - they seem to be vaccinating against things that are very rare or non-life threatening.

Fercryinoutloud.... are they gonna vaccinate us against enjoying looking at boobs or having a cuppa or licking an ice cream next? What is it with these people? Puritanical killjoys, the lot of 'em.

Having read the article it's worse than I thought. They engineer your body to consume the nicotine before it reaches the brain. So if you already smoke, you don't get your hit, and presumably smoke even more trying to get it. All of the death, none of the fun. Somebody hasn't thought this through.

So if you already smoke, you don't get your hit, and presumably smoke even more trying to get it. Quite. You can vaccinate against enjoying nicotine, but you can't vaccinate against wanting nicotine. And people vaccinated against nicotine will still be addicted to smoking.

And people vaccinated against nicotine will still be addicted to smoking. And it brings up a moral question of do parents have the right to vaccinate their kids against being able to enjoy nicotine (or any other potentially addictive substance, because you can bet they won't stop at nicotine)? Should the vaccination be delayed until they reach majority age and should they be allowed to try it first before deciding? The more I think about it, the more I think these researchers have fundamentally misunderstood what it is to be human.
