I've been getting quite the dry irritated throat these last couple of days. Been vaping heavily for around 2 weeks. First on a v2, now on a Riva 1100. Generally use juices which are mainly PG with some VG.
Maybe I should try higher VG? But the thing is, my absolute fave flavours are Vermilion River, and these are high PG...
This doesn't have anything to do with coming off analogues - I'm one of those daft buggers who wasn't a proper smoker before getting into vaping. I was for 10 years, but then quit (Allen Carr) for a year, and the last 2 years I've mostly been a casual smoker who succumbs when drinking, which can be difficult when going on holiday, when I'm drinking and surrounded by smokers everyday...last year, I came back from Kos properly smoking full-time again, and I had to do the quitting process again (which I find relatively easy - I have the added incentive of working toward my upcoming karate black belt grading and CANNOT mess with my fitness).
Anyway, so I thought I'd try e-cigs, thinking I'd save them for drinking weekends and my 2 week holiday to Turkey coming up soon. Course, got the PV in the post, excitedly tried all the flavours like a right dickhead and bham! Hooked.
Anyway. I don't mind. It hasn't messed with my lungs and karate and I just enjoy it so darn much....but, got this dry tickly throat and this morning had a coughing fit.
Mind you, I did realise this morning that I'd been smoking a 24mg RV maplewood, when normally I use a 10-12mg juice....
Fact is, no matter how lovely and safer than analogues e-cigs are, they're still going to mess with your throat...it's a constant dry heat, and though the FDA have approved the ingredients for consumption, they haven't approved them for relentless inhalation (and probs never will, until they find a way for the e-cig to fill their purses). But irritant compared to carcinogen is like a stubbed toe compared to amputation.
So, what I've learnt is: lower mg. Also, I need to work on keeping my throat wet, and plain old water isn't cutting it. I've had a google and there's alot of sites saying gargling with cayenne pepper is great for the throat...so, I'm going to give that a try, have a gargle cup next to my PC, keep at it every hour or so, and I'll update anyone, just in case you're going through similar and are interested.
Any other tips for a wet throat?
I don't want to give up my e-cig. God himself couldn't pry the damn thing from my hand.
Cheers.

I found pg to be way way too drying and that I'm intolerant to it - I *will* break out in a rash if I use too much of it. Higher nitotine content also irritates and dries the heck out of my throat. The temperature you vape at also has an effect so going higher resistance may help. One thing I've found that helps is to chew on sugar free gum. It produces more saliva and keeps your throat more moist as a result. If someone who drinks utterly nothing but water and has more than a litre of the stuff a day still has a dry throat from vaping then there 'aint much more you can do just drinking water It helps but as vg and pg are humectants you'll find the more you vape the drier your throat will feel. Keep it up though if you can if it's helping you to vape. I'd also look into products specifically for dry mouth as they do exist. My mum is a dental nurse and reccommended some fancy gum to use but I found regular sugar free stuff does the trick as well Good luck and hope you get better soon

Booblay you seem to have all the bases covered in terms of PG/VG ratio, nic strength, LR vs HR, keeping your fluid intake up. I'm not aware of any other tips & tricks so I think it'll be down to experimentaion to find the right balance of all the above. Gargling pepper seems intuitively to be the exact opposite of what you need, so I'll be interested to hear how that works

I had the same problem last week, upped my water intake, less coffee, less vaping, vaped with 0% nic with more VG and everything calmed down. yesterday I was vaping on a sample bottle sent to me with one of my orders (aint got the foggiest what's in the ingrediants ) but I felt ok , but started feeling my throat slightly irritated again, but not as severe as last week. Not sure if this will help, but thought I would share my experience. You will get there in the end, so don't worry yourself. it could eve be that in the first week we are so overly excited trying out different flavors that we get carried away without realising that we are over doing it and the irritated throat is a sign to say "ok love me throats had enough" lol I dunno with daily experimenting we will learn what suits us

You seemed to have worked out already what the problem could be! I don't know why, but I find drinking fizzy water helps keep my throat more moist than plain water. I have no idea why? It may also be something that will clear on it's own. My throat was pretty bad at first but I was vaping plain PG. I don't do that anymore. I do know how totally moreish VR is , but could you perhaps find something that you could vape in between then you could get a higher VG content? This would help your throat and would possibly stop you ever getting bored/not being able to taste the VR, cause you wouldn't want that to happen I quite like some of the 50/50 mixes that Vapourjuice does. Vapology does a tailor made e-liquid where you can choose the base and Paradise Vapes also alllows you to tweak the base.

I thought I would update you, I'm still vaping on the sample e liquid and my throat is playing up! It feels as though I've smoked 20 beson and hedges in one go, I'm sure it's either the nicotine or PG with me, or it could even be both, but I love the taste so much I can't put it down.
I might contact the supplier and ask whats in it and if it is PG or high nic, I'll buy a VG with lower or 0% (I've had 0% and it was ok with me)

Karma, You all have helped tremendously and I can't thank you all enough What i ment was that it's confusing to actually figure out for yourself what it is that irritates the throat :, but don't worry I'm getting there and I know where to find you all if I need help But, I think I've conquered mine with extra VG low or 0% nic, but it's the strawberry e liquid sample I got from exhale, I can't put it down! But, I will contact dan to find out if it's pg or vg and what nic it has.

With juices it really is just trial and error to find our what suits you best. Don't forget, if you have some juices that you really don't get on with you can always pop them on the classified board for sale or swap

ooooo I'll keep that in mind. I have 2 which I dislike, but I get worried in mentioning the suppliers name, cos I don't want to offend as I believe every supplier is doing the best they can and it may only be me disliking it. I'll go and check now Thankyou

It very probably is just you, lol! I've been caught out a few times trying juice that others have raved about only to find that I find it quite disgusting Best to always try new juices in small sample bottles never mind how yummy they sound
