I think hifistud tried this a while back - with limited success.

Oh cos I've just got one & was trying it out last ngt with my pass through & it did charge it up as I was using it. It just made me think that I'd seen something like this with a PV.

There is an ego style thingy with an inductive charging base too. Forgot the name, maybe hifi will be along later to enlighten us.

We're actively looking at a self-build mod that will charge on the power mat with no external boxes - once we've got it sorted, expect some video!
But Perp's link is correct - and Gill, my wife, is ore than happy with hers - it's all she uses these days.

I managed to pick up the Rx part for £4.30 ea delivered from play.com . I also got the portable 3 section mat from them for under £9 delivered also. I have ordered a few more receivers so I can play about with one by taking it apart & putting the guts into a funky mod for myself that uses a phone battery. It basically will make it a wireless passthrough. Is that your intention too or are you going for the cylinder version of it?

At the moment, MGJones and I have the 2x18650 battery boxes with room for electronics up top - the biggest hurdle is the charging circuit to take the 5v from the receiver coil and deliver it to the batteries to be sure that there's as little risk as possible of the whole thing going postal on the charging mat. The Powermat's construction is such that each coil is a specific size and it's pretty much too big to fit a receiver coil to a cylinder - the coils are around an inch and a half in diameter, and that's pretty hefty, but a dual 18650 box can handle it nicely.

I take it that the batteries are in series then being a dual 18650 box. My thoughts on this when I was going through the brain storming part of it was to use a buck boost circuit to up the voltage to around 12v. Then feed that into a dual pack charger circuit for rc kit. Which pumps out the 8.4v for charging. The reason I scrapped it was two fold. First was battery stacking & the associated fears of that (had not read up in it much then though) secondly due to the amount of space this config would take up if not a combined design. So I left it in the book of ideas & have gone for single battery mods. I might go back to that idea at a later date when I have time to redesign my own circuits & possibly my own ic.

Nope - they're in parallel, even if we do decide to use cylindricals - we'll be using the Evolv DNA as the power controller, so it's 3.7 and definitely not stacked. The other option is a flat pack li-polymer battery - the issue is sourcing the right dimension and capacity.

If your going for the parallel battery what's your take on balancing the charge on them? I have looked around for lipo batteries that could be manufactured into particular shaped spaces but the cost put me off that idea (that was not for a vape mod though). Have you looked through the rc world of batteries, though guessing you have lol. I did find one at a reasonable size & price called the "Intellect 3.7V 5000mAh 40C LIPO Race Pack" but by the sounds of it your looking for something in the +1Ah range. I do like the look of the DNA 12 & It's not that expensive. There are quite a few lipo charging chips out there it would be the issue of finding one to match the quality of the rest of your product.
