Highly so Karma and there's very little veterinary medication that can be given to help, antibiotics are very often prescribed . . . I think Vets prescribe them to keep owners happy as much as anything.
It's something that seems to need to run it's natural course for it to fully go.
Although it can be quite distressing for both doggy and owner when it's a real bad case.

Yes, and the poor dog still needs to be out and get exercise, but you have to avoid other dogs as much as possible, not always easy i'm afraid

Next time I consider a pet I'll get a vet and see if it's cheaper to get a dog to see him

My grandmas dog has got kennel cough at the moment, he hasn't been boarded anywhere so he's probably picked it up whilst out on his walks. He sounds awful the poor thing he's always been quite a sickly doggie anyway as he was taken in by my grandparents as a stray when he was a pup. He'd been out in the snow for a week when they took him in the poor thing, he's a very nervous dog with people he doesn't know We love him though he's a bearded collie cross

Sad story, but to be aware, my inlaws dog, 9 years of age, lovley gentle creature, developed a bit of a cough, had all the vaccines etc. Yet without warning, this little tickle of a cough turned out to be a tumor on her lungs. She was taken to the vets across the road, and they initially thought it was a saggy throat condition that can cause a cough / odd / laboured breathing, they had her in the next day, and that's when they discovered this tumor, day 3 she had to be put to sleep. What made this worse was that she seemed in perfect health, she was taken to vets straight away (Monday, discovered the cough Sunday) - and Wednesday she had to be put to sleep bless her Sorley missed, especially by the children, as it's "where's Lucy?" also her day-time companion, of 8 years still pines over her. If in doubt, always ring / take them to vets. I do hope this scenario doesn't turn out like this for anyone else, especially the original poster.

We've had rescue dogs all our lives and all have lived many years, one of them until she was 19 and we both smoked in the house, my husband still does. The reasons every one was eventually put to sleep weren't smoking related. The last dog we had to have put to sleep was Sammy, he was a german shepherd and was 11, the youngest dog we've ever lost. His back legs 'went' as they tend to with the breed and he could barely walk. I thought the world of Sammy, he was extra special to me and I still miss him very much.

The vet said that she has an irritated upper respiratory tract (basically a canine sore throat ), her heart and lungs are clear and that there's no sign of any infection, thank goodness. What's caused it is still a bit of a mystery, as there are so many things that are suspects! She's been given a steroid injection, and I have instructions from the vet to buy a certain cough medicine , and the dosage to give her. Bless her, she was her usual well-behaved self with him, but she wouldn't let him have a good look down her throat - it's about the only thing she won't let him do.
