Our springer Chloe, has started to cough a little in the evenings over the past two days. As we used to smoke in the same room as her, I was wondering if it's her lungs clearing, the same as happens to humans? She isn't coughing a lot, so I'm not sure if it's a furball or what, but it is different to normal. If it continues for a few days more then obviously she'll go to the vets, but I'm trying not to be an over-protective mummy at the moment.
I wondered if anyone else noticed the same thing? She doesn't really do other dogs (ex working springer), so I'm not sure if she'd have caught a cough from another dog. She does cough on walks as she tries to swim and drink at the same time (silly moo) but that stops pretty quickly, but it's the same sort of cough.

Don't think the switch to vaping would affect her to be honest fan.....................How many analogues did she used to smoke a day?.......................... To be serious though, she may just have a cough.....best to get her checked out.......

My previous dog was raised in a house of heavy smoking, my dad was 60+ per day and never coughed. I've never heard of dogs coughing due to passive smoke. My current dog has never coughed when I smoked in the house or since I've started vaping. I really think you should get her checked at the vet. My neighbours dog coughs on walks, especially when swimming and it's turned out to be a problem with her lungs, which she has just had to have washed out this past week.
Coughing in dogs is not normal that I'm aware of, the only dog I ever had that coughed was one who had been in a dogs home for many years and he had kennel cough.

Thanks folks, I use Advocate on her which does treat for lung worm, but I've just googled and we are apparently in a hot spot area, and she does tend to eat a fair amount of grass. I'll pop her to the vets to see if he can hear anything in her lungs.

I agree I'd pop her along to the vets for a check up. My 2 have always been around me and my dad when we smoked and never had any problems and now I've switched to vaping, neither of them cough or anything. She might just have had something caught in her throat and have a bit of residual irritation? but I'd still go to the vet just to be on the safe side

vets to be on the safe side i reckon, my dog never reacts to anything, admittedly i never smoked in the house only outside, but it's better to be safe

What an interesting theory. It does seems logical to assume that since dogs who live with smokers (apparently) have a higher incidence of nasal tumours and lung cancer that they might also suffer "quitter's cough" when their owners give up smoking.
I'd definitely get Chloe to the vets asap though just in case it is something serious.

debb72, yes you are mad! Four is the most I'd consider, but then I'd need to move house and buy a far bigger sofa > . Chloe's got an appointment with her Uncle Byron tomorrow evening, so I'll let you know how she gets on.

Without reading this whole thread, I'm pressuming the dog has kennel cough and needs to see the vet Vaping/smoking has never had any effect on our dog, the only time he had a cough was kennel cough

I'd think it more likely Chole has a touch of kennel cough as well, there's been alot of it about this year, even if a doggy hasn't been boarded anywhere. The vet will soon know Fan. If you've any honey, that in a little glycerine makes quite a soothing/anti bacterial mix for a tickly doggy cough, as it does for humans.

That's a good point Perpy, your dog doesn't have to have been boarded to get kennel cough. My dog has never been boarded, kennel cough is just very infectious
