take out the SD card and try that direct too the laptop either using a card reader or in the correct port and see what happens. it sounds like the SD card is corrupt but there are ways around it.

First off Anne, how do you transfer the files? Is it by cable from the camera, or by SD card direct to the laptop?

Thank you I don't have a card reader and it's an xd picture card which doesn't seem to fit any orifice on my lap top I think I may have to format it and start again

the only thing i can find is to use check disk which can be via cmd command following these instructions.
Can you copy the DCIM folder to your C: drive and try to open it there? If your camera has a Drive Letter (ex) F: when plugged into the computer, then try running Check Disk on the drive. Go to Start/Search and type CMD. Right click the CMD.exe icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. In the Command Prompt type the drive letter of the camera (ex) F: (or whatever drive letter it is) and press enter. The prompt should now read F: now type chkdsk /R and press enter. Check Disk will try and fix any file errors.
you could also try this, if you can view the pics via the camera. empty the pics from the internal memory of the camera onto your laptop and then move the pics on the card to the internal memory of the camera, you may have to do this several times if you have lots of pics on the xd card.
i would try this first if you can.

Nothing much to add to raggy's good advice except I would run the command chkdsk /r /f. Alternatively you can Right Click Drive--->Properties-->Tools Tab--->Error Checking---> Select Both options and click start and wait for it to finish like shown below:
