Ah, I understand! I think the sole purpose of that o-ring is to make sure that you don't screw the screw down so far that it fails to contact the base of whatever you put on top. I'm using the recessed connector, so I removed the o-ring ages ago.

I've heard too many horror stories about cheap chargers and I wouldn't want to take the risk. A good charger like the i4 (for example) is £25 well spent.
