We had a great day in the European Parliament today – and without your help it could very easily have been a disaster.



The European Parliament is very different from the UK Parliament. It is always balanced with no one party having control and there are no permanent coalitions. Issues are voted on one by one and lobbying by citizens can really make a difference.



You were part of the difference this time.



Medical regulation of e-cigarettes was rejected by 362-298. That wouldn’t have happened a month ago.



We won the vote on allowing flavourings in e-cigs by 342-317. That wouldn’t have happened a month ago.



This is your victory but the road doesn’t end here, the final shape of the legislation must now be negotiated with national governments, and many of those have made clear that they want the medicinal regulation approach.



I hope we can persuade them to change tack and accept the sense of the Parliament's position. There may be other opportunities for us to campaign together.



Make no mistake, smoking is immensely damaging, shortens 700,000 lives across the EU every year and I support efforts to reduce tobacco use. That’s why I am such a supporter of e-cigs.
