There are various pitfalls I encountered when starting my recoiling journey which were frustrating at the time but now I completely understand what was going wrong and why the coil didn't work as a result. 1) winding the wraps too widely - this meant that the coil wouldn't fit inside the atomiser body and touched the sides, causing a short. 2) winding the wraps too closely - this obviously causes a short too. Either the coil won't register at all on my Vamo (9.9), or the first time you put some power through it there is a bit flash and pop, followed by a very electrical smell. Thank goodness the Vamo has all that protection built in! 3) using nail clippers to trim the tail ends after reassembling the atomiser - this caused a short. Remedy = whilst squeezing the atomiser gently top to bottom, wiggle the wires until they break; this leaves no protrusion and therefore no short. 4) using too much wick - loads of dry hits because the wick can't feed the coil fast enough. I settled on 2mm Ekowool eventually with .2 Kanthal for the coil. 5) - winding the coil too tight - strangled the wick - see 4) I solved this by heating the Ekowool with a fag lighter and inserting a thin needle through the hollow middle to support the wick whilst I was wrapping. With needle removed, there was enough 'give' in the coil to allow the wick to do its job. 6) allowing the coil to sit too high in the body - risk of the coil touching the top pin (Protank) and a short. Solved by a gentle tug on the tails after reinserting the grommet and pin as these have a tendency to push the coil up in the body during insertion. I'm sure there are more - if they come to me, I'll edit this post to include them. Hope this helps all you wannabe recoilers out there, believe me there is nothing more satisfying than the first vape on a homemade coil - bleddy 'ansum! Thats a useful list chykensa Number 1 was always my biggest problem, but think I may have overcome that one. When new coil is sat inside atomiser body, if it looks a bit wide I gently squeeze together a little with tweezers, and my screwdriver set has a long pointy bit which helps to position the individual wraps and position it all centrally. Number 4 .. I'm now learning .. not too much wick Fresh from yesterdays success I made another regular coil for my protank mini 2 this afternoon .. yess another good one, 2.2 ohm and just filled the tank now.

A very generous giveaway poochops. A superb bit of kit that makes re-coiling a lot easier (I've already got one too) You do know that in 20 years time the wood ones are going to be on Antiques Roadshow being valued at about £5000 each

Terrifying ... one day - soon, (most probably) this'll be me! Thanks tominmidsHi Pepperty. Yes you can do it too One of the things that helped me a lot is that I used to work on an assembly track. We would frequently be moved around, so I had to learn new jobs frequently. Saying I could'nt do it was not an option, and true enough I could learn fairly quickly, it was the same for most of my workmates too, after an hour or two of moaning that the job was beyond them they'd get stuck into it and after a few days we'd be quite passable at it. So once I figured that no job was impossible it was just a matter of how long it was going to take me to get up to speed. I think its a psychological thing. You can do it, its just a matter of when it all comes together So I look forward to hearing about your first successful re-coil job. It does'nt matter when you do, just so long as you do do it, because you can, I know you can

chykensa I have been thinking about a microcoil, but worry about trying to thread the cotton through that tiny coil but yes I think it will have to be the next "project" Microcoils are much easier to make than standard coils The biggest problem is using too much cotton wool, you hardly need any and you'll be amazed how little you need to use to make it work right, if you think it looks correct you've used too much Thanks Greg I'll remember this when I try a microcoil

Hi Tom, so glad to have assisted in some small way, that is what we all are on this forum for. We are all beginners at some point and we have all learned from others and hopefully pass or experiences on. We just never stop learning....and that is the fun. Cheers Neil Thanks Neil, and thanks to the many people on this forum that give time and effort to help us newbies, it is much appreciated I've learned a hell of a lot on this forum, and the number of people I've learnt from is huge, and hopefully I can pass on my experience too Tom

Thanks ionian I used ekowool wick (2.0) with a couple of strands for flavour wick. Previous attempts resulted in either shorting out or a very very tight draw. Many thanks to Super-Shiny and Greigster for their excellent tutorials
