It's a dear little frying pan Why not put some water in it and practice, MM? It takes a bit of getting used to digital controls. I'm hoping you'll be pleasantly surprised how fast the hob is (when you want it to be). I tell you what it does lovely - fried bread! I put some oil in the pan and rub the slice of bread* in it, then turn it over immediately and rub the other side - then set the heat on ? probably about number 3 on yours, set the timer for 5 minutes, take a peek at underside of bread, reset time according to... Turn it over and repeat, lovely even crispy fried bread Then do yer egg. You can let the bread look after itself (once you know your temps) and do other things; then attend to your egg *I do it with a thick slice of breadmaker bread, don't know what supermarket stuff would be like. Oh! and I usually use olive oil for fried bread, just so I don't feel so guilty for having it scylla

MM is going to send me a couple of her famous fried eggs. I wonder how they are going to taste after the trip across the pond? She wants my kingdom in exchange.

I think that's consolidated my understanding, Jerry, which I was kinda getting around to myself but everybody on consumer electronics forums takes it for granted and uses so much jargon. I still can't understand why the components can be so expensive though - thousands Definitely bedtime now. scylla Scyll, you don't have to spend thousands to get a good system. Those prices are for top of line audio systems. Shop around, I'm sure you can find one in the hundreds. Jerry

Now Scyll, you are so norty!! I love fried bread!! Haven't been able to make it for years but always ask for it when I go in a 'greasy spoon' place!! At this rate I am going to ruin my years of healthy eating!! I just made some chips!! Well sort of! Peeled a potato, cut it into large chunks, put it in the thingie in hot oil, turned them over a few times. Then ate them!! Not bad. The 'thingie' works very quickly - I haven't worked out the temps and times yet. Didn't think to try it with water first Scyll!! One problem, my flat now smells greasy!! Ugggh!! So probably will not use it too often after I have had my fried egg!! Jerry, you had better duck 'cos I will chuck the egg over to you. It will be solidified by the time it gets there!! Yes, Linda it does look like a record deck. MM

Yes they work quite well, but some are noisier than others, a kinda wooshy-hissy sound. I used to use them for smoke-extraction, of course Also, the lid, in which the filtering goes on, does eventually get cacky because you can't get inside to clean it although you can clean the spike that goes into the water. It wouldn't be so bad in soft water areas nor in a non-smoking house, of course scylla
