Having ogled Gordy's Ody at Vapefest Ireland, I've caved in to my mod envy and got myself a Penelope. Got the hang of the whole coil malarkey quickly (with a nod to Blakey) and happily building my own coils to my resistance of choice.
The only issue that I'm struggling with and that's how far to screw the rebuildable part into the base. If I screw it flush then it gurgles and I get liquid leaking into the centre post (liquid control only open one half turn): if I screw it down further so it sticks out 2 mm then my Gripper vv starts to short out, I pull the post but after a while it starts to get temperamental again.
So, finally, the question is how do you screw yours?

Generally the centre post on the penny should only stick out a smidgeon. The trick is in the sequence....
screw the base tight onto your mod screw in the rebuildable bit until the mod just fires unscrew the base a fraction of a turn to get some airflow screw the rebuildable bit in again a fraction until it fires screw down the large retaining ring to lock it in place

Hi Andy good to see you here the best plan if you are keeping penny on a certain mod is to firstly screw the base onto your mod... then screw down the rebuildable part down as far as she will go so she makes contact with your mods center pin pop the center tube/mouth piece on and check if it has sufficient air flow usually leaking and gurgling is where excess juice is getting into the atty chamber and leaking out... so be carful with how far you have the juice control open... the tiniest turn can make a huge difference

I just wanted to add, that I've found that most times mine "gurgles" is due to condensation in the chamber. It can be cleared by closing the juice control and standing it upside down for 5 mins. It all runs out of it into a neat little puddle. I found this out by tipping it upside down and unscrewing the base to fill it up when using the clear tank. You can squeeze a little more juice into it that way.

Thanks guys - that's what I thought I tried to begin with but once I finish this particularly nice tank of El Toro VP then I'll give it another go. Wondering whether it's down to the mod's centre pin not having enough depth - I can feel a tortured process of convincing myself to buy a Provari coming on so may run with this for a bit Gordy - IIRC I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time when you wanted to borrow a pair of scissors at the rebuildable workshop - see what you started?

Lol that was mod envy caught on camera alright - despite the casual vaping pose there's envy in them eyes. It's all your fault. Ta for the link.

Thanks Chrissie.
Right, followed the above to the letter, some fiddling, some progress but no real conclusions. Today I learned....... - post out by 0.5 mm - this is the amount of extension I get following the above method, leaking from the off - post out 1mm, the occasional bit of gurgling and the odd blow through required every 15 minutes or so - post out 1.5 mm, absolutely spot on in terms of being able to control the vape but post seems too long for the gripper and it will be pretty tempremental and short frequently
The liquid control in the above scenarios is open about 1/2 a turn although flavour and vapour production suggest that an extra 1/4 of a turn would make a whole lot of difference. If I screw in the rebuildable in past the 1mm point I start to feel some good o-ring resistance implying a good seal - anything less then the threads seem to move too freely suggesting the issue may be down to poor o-ring compression. I've ordered some fatter o-rings on eBay which might give me a good seal with less extension but Hong Kong post doesn't seem to be what it used to be which gives me a few weeks to play before they arrive and I can throw them into the mix.
We're not talking major leaking by any means, just a few drops but I can't help but think there's a really easy solution out there as the engineering of this device seems spot on.
Any ideas welcome.

Tried a number of different wicks Gordy - either 3mm or 3.5mm with or without a 2mm buffer section underneath the coil. Either ready wires or small neat joins hidden underneath the wick and not exposed in any way. Negative side cut just below the housing and positive side cut at the point of the centre post o-ring,

hhhmmmm and the locking ring is screwed down tight? ..only thing i can think is start vaping and then open the juice control very gradually and see if that helps

Hi thinwhiteduck - welcome from me too. I have to say I have done pretty much all the same things as you and I also still get a little bit of juice leaking through - at least I've got it down to a minimum compared to when I started with it. To be honest, I've just stopped worrying about it and give the connection a regular mop. I'm just guessing that with all the bits and pieces that make these up, the slightest variation might be the culprit.

So attached have I been to the Penny since I got it that I abandoned any principles of method. Attached a vivi nova to the gripper and you know what, that was shorting too as soon as I tightened it. Closer inspection revealed that the grommet inside the 510 connector had split causing a short under any degree of pressure. Took it apart, replaced the grommet with one from the bottom of a vivi nova head, super glued her back up and she's vaping like a demon. Also fitted a spare o-ring behind the plastic spacer on the penny centre pole which gives me an extra mm clearance and a little more compression. El Toro Guevera has never tasted this great. Had enough of flaky mods though and think I might be able to get away with using this experience as a tortured self-justification to buy a Provari Mini.
