The resulting tsunami hit Crescent City, California with an 8 foot surge. The news said that homes and boats were destroyed and four people were swept out to sea.

I couldn't agree more Perpy - we may have been having some severe adverse weather here in the UK over the last few years, but nothing on this sort of scale

Is it all down to Global Warming do you think Chris . . . certainly this last 10 - 15 years, there's been so many of these awful natural disasters.
It may come out wrongly this, but as well as the awful loss of human life, it does upset me the animals that also perish. . . I'll never forget seeing that doggy washed away from a poor lady's arms who was being rescued in the Queensland floods I think it was.

Perpy, I'm not sure what it is down to. But IMHO, I think for too many years we have taken too much out of the environment & given so little back - apart from our excessive waste that is And yes, I also am so saddened at the thought of the loss of the animals, not just pets but farm animals & wildlife

Completely agree there Chris, we've abused this planet of ours and are now paying a terrible price for that. Sorry, am not very upbeat tonight, all this dreadful news.

I don't think we can blame ourselves for this one. Our tectonic plates are still shifting, as they have done for millions (billions?) of years. It's like arm-wrestling - two very strong men straining every sinew, then one gives way. But, the Japanese, however earthquake-savvy they are, didn't allow for power failures causing cooling systems to fail in their nuclear power stations. (I am anti nuclear power purely because of the poison that future generations will be landed with, not even considering the widespread devastation in the event of leaks.) I expect to have emails from the international animal rescue charities very soon, like after Katrina, Haiti and Queensland. We can do a little to help the poor creatures who have survived scylla

All I've watched is sky news since it first happened as you just can't belive how much knock on effect this will have around the world as it will affect us all. I'm a big fan of www.zeitgeist.com and can't help think a lot of what happened was man made destruction. is anybody familiar with the date 21st December 2012 ?
