Yep, I agree with Magicma, very clever; I wouldn't have a clue how to do that, Scylla.
But here's something sad; we've got a few birds nesting around my house/garden. We've blue tits and a starling that have nested in the same place three-or-four-years running. The blue tits nest behind some tiles on the wall, and the starlings nest in my ground floor soffits (which annoys Wor Lass since she wants me to replace the rotting wood), but this year we had a pair of magpies nest in one of the large cherry trees in the garden.
Anyway, it's all quiet there this morning - those magpies usually make a right racket - and there's a dead magpie chick on the grass where it's fallen out of the nest.
It's a shame; we almost consider these birds as 'pets'. But with regards the blue tits and starlings, each year we find at least one dead chick/fledgling somewhere around the area of their nests; and one year my dog grabbed and killed a tit fledgling he found underneath a trailer. We were cross (at ourselves) and just keep him out of the back garden when we suspect it's close to 'fledgling time'.
Nature certainly isn't kind.

When I saw the word "magpies" I thought your other birdy babes would be toast! Or rather the spread on the toast I don't know about you - I don't think men are so bad - but I humanise them ridiculously. However, watching the Decorah eagles and the Loch Garten ospreys has been a great education for me, I can see how their behaviour is in their genes and there's no sentiment in there. My heart still goes out to them though. scylla

Here's a short video of Odin's fish delivery: MM - don't try to watch the long one, it'll send you to sleep You should be able to manage "Storm's projective poop" though It's been raining most of the day and there are watery blobs on the lens scylla

MM, both the chicks are being very, very well fed. Because EJ and Odin have only had two chicks hatch this year it's comparatively easy for them - last year they had three to feed. Odin is a complete star, managing to catch fish in the bad wind and rain. If you could have stuck with my 14-minute video you would see how the feeding is going now that both the chicks are strong But I forgive everyone (I don't really forgive everyone - in fact I intend to stalk certain members who do video reviews 'n stuff and I shall persecute them until they watch my birds.) scylla >

Aww, you are really kind {{{MM}}}
You wouldn't believe it, but Storm (chick #2) has been so conditioned into being laid upon by Star that s/he now voluntarily tucks his/her head under Star, honestly! I reckon Storm thinks it's the safest place to be - this video is very short, I promise:
There's nothing to see on the eagle cam except a bit of someone's back - and this notice:
Fledge could happen between June 11 and 25. Bob believes it will be closer to the 25th.

I watched last evening (Ospreys) - and mum was feeding the biggie 10 times as much as littley, despite her constant attempts to get some. She is obviously getting enough to keep her going, and mum is a real trooper when it comes to 'sharing'. Unfortunately she just hasn't learned: one for you, then one for you! Have you been watching BBCs Springwatch? Last night was heartbreaking - a nest of babies (four of them) now all dead. A new mum - who kept leaving the nest for too long, babies got cold thus didn't open mouths for food, food arrived, 'sleeping/cold' babies' - parents apparently new and not quite comprehending what the babies needed etc. So sad, because I am sure they were doing their best. Isn't nature cruel at times? MM - good luck with your exhibition. Hope you get it all togather - am sure you will.

Hi Scyll and Hanow.....just caught up with things. Been on the Pantiles till now taking all my stuff down ready for exhibition - I always seem to carry ten times more than anyone else!! I literally emptied my shed into friends' car - when I got to Art Club (where I store for Exh) I had so much stuff I hadn't seen for a long while!!!! Will now have to sort out what to show - had to rake around as I have not painted since May 2010. It's an outdoor Exh - so please pray for good weather or at least no rain (or wind). It runs from Sat 11th June to Sun 19th June so I have to hope that the fledge does not happen until 25th!!! Not caught up with Springwatch yet - rather pleased I haven't with what happened last night. Oh dear! I don't like 'nature being cruel' MM

I cannot bear nature being cruel, either, MM Hanow, they worked it out that Dad was at the bottom of the failure - he just was not helping enough and Mum couldn't cope on her own. He only fed twice in a whole day. It was so terribly sad Also, Storm is getting very well fed now, never fear - s/he has not only seconds but thirds and fourths, EJ feeds them after they've retired stuffed!!! Oh, and I tell you what was also heartbreaking - all the dear little creatures that the buzzard chick had eaten Right, please let's cheer up! Here is EJ alarm-calling re an unseen threat. You don't need to watch much of it to get the idea, but Odin comes and joins in a bit later on. (Scuse the insert of me posting on the RSPB, I cannot get it into my head that I must stay on the scene I'm video-ing > I just forget ??? I've even found my bank statement just now when I was editing one of the sessions ) Later on I will post a nice view of Odin, short 'n sweet cos he flies off. He's a lovely bird I truly love EJ and Odin, silly me MM, I sincerely hope you have good weather and a successful exhibition - but I do hope you can get painting again very soon! After all, it's what you do, you are a painter thru and thru - you must feel so frustrated scylla x
