What I would do is to buy a Double pole toggle switch to use for the power and switching in the resistor when finished. So I would connect one side in line with the battery to switch it in and the other pole would be used to switch in the resisitor when the switch is back in the off position. Do a quick search in google for DPDT switches to see what I mean

You might find a problem with these as they need to be very close to what you are looking at, a couple of cm. As they are just loupe's attached to a frame.

You might find something like this a bit more useful:

it only has a small magnification on the main part but has a higher magnification insert.
