I don't need statistics to show me that it's mostly people on low incomes who buy clothes in Tesco or shop in pound shops where most of the stuff is produced in low cost economies. And they are the people who have suffered most from outsourcing of jobs. It started with outsourcing manufacturing jobs, then services were too costly so jobs were outsourced to companies paying lower wages, now there's a focus on benefits being too high. Where will it end? All very well putting it down to market forces and progress until it hits your job/income or your children's job prospects. This paper, particularly the conculsion, written a few years ago by David Ashton from DeMontford University makes interesting reading: www.dmu.ac.uk/Images/3.%20Globalisation%20and%20the%20future%20of%20the%20youth%20labour%20market_tcm6-10999.pdfFair enough they cloth themselves with cheaper clothes and buy cheaper food , but what do you expect them to do with pittance, shop local buy a chicken for a tenner from butcher or a fiver from tesco, do you honstly think they wanna wear tesco toe benders, it aint the poor thats wrecked the country for buying cheaper goods from china cusa thats all they can afford, its the rich, remember that its the poor that suffer and take the sharp end of the stick.

True Karma, just another way of the government trying to justify employment figures you mean unemployment figures! Interestingly, it was Mrs Thartcher that encouraged people onto the then Incapacity Benefit, made the unemployment figures look better Now, the Torys want as many people off sickness benefits and back into work. There's probably even less jobs now, certainly less full time permanent positions it would be funny if it wasn't so sad for normal people caught up in this mess >

Scaffman, this is a really interesting debate! And, as in any debate, people will have different views.

There are certainly more people employed now in part time/temporary contract jobs Yes, I believe that is true and is consequently skewing the figures. 29.9 million workers. 2.4 million unemployed. 8.1 million part-time, of which 1.4 million of those are wanting full time work. Yes they scew with the figures and theirs more part time jobs than ever, fair point.

Fair enough they cloth themselves with cheaper clothes and buy cheaper food , but what do you expect them to do with pittance, shop local buy a chicken for a tenner from butcher or a fiver from tesco, do you honstly think they wanna wear tesco toe benders, it aint the poor thats wrecked the country for buying cheaper goods from china cusa thats all they can afford, its the rich, remember that its the poor that suffer and take the sharp end of the stick. They're doing no more than I would do in their position but that doesn't change the consequences. I'm certainly not well off and when the value of my my pension diminishes, as it's bound to in time, I'll have to swallow my principles and "cut my cloth to suit my measure". Meanwhile, I try to do my bit to support local businesses. I agree with you wholeheartedly that it's the poor who suffer. The future for all of us was probably decided last week by a select group of people in a (smokeless?) room in Davos last week. Unbridled capitalism seems to be just a hard on ordinary folk as unbridled communism. We just can't win.
