A computer geek pal of mine cleaned out my PC this afternoon but when he went to start it up again it wouldn't boot into windows (even in safe mode). He 'Googled' around for some info and seems to think it has something to do with AVG (free edition anti-virus) latest update (this morning). Any ideas people? Have I lost my PC for good? Fox

After a quick search I found that this is a common problem and there are ways to fix it. Are you sure it's AVG and not a mistake your friend made?

All my friend did was clean the fan so I doubt that would stop the PC from booting into windows. Googling does seem to bring up quite a few grumbles about AVG updates but nothing for this week. I'm using AVG free on my laptop (win7) and am now getting a tad nervous. Fox

Foxy, make sure that the connections for your hard drive weren't disturbed. They could have been accidentally disconnected.

All now fixed! I rather think Jerry hit the nail right on the head. I think AVG got the blame as its files were the last to load and, therefore, appeared to be stalling the booting process. A recovery console disc was used plus some twiddling with the BIOS (including removing a small battery ) plus the use of some pretty ripe language (not by me!). I'm reasonably good with computers when they're working but, as you can likely tell, when not I'm right royally stuffed! Thanks for your advice. Fox

LOL! I changed to AVG from Avast when the latter decided to place .exe files in the category of trojan and expel them all from my (and others) PC. This was a few years back but I've had no problems with AVG since so stuck with it. It seems all (free) antivirus programs have their problems so it's difficult to plump for just the one. Fox

Foxy, AVG used to be good - but these days Avast is better

How odd. For the first time ever my windows wouldn't boot up today. I left it installing 14 WIN updates when I went to bed last night. It did it's own repair and a system restore to before the updates and seems fine now. Almost had a panic attack though I agree with Chrissie. Dump AVG and get Avast Free. Nearly all the people who had problems with malvertising a few weeks ago were AVG users.

Did you replace the small battery after you removed it? It's the CMOS battery and is responsible for keeping your date/time settings running when the PC is not powered. It shouldn't matter if you didn't unless you have time sensitive software on the PC. If the battery can't maintain the clock, then every time you boot up, it will set the time/date to the factory default. AVG has been the cause of PC's going into a boot loop for a while now. It normally happens on rebuilds and not updates. It's easy to remedy once you can access the system. You simply remove AVG and the problem generally goes away. Sean

As the consensus seems to be I should change back to Avast, I will. I don't know whether the battery was replaced but I think it was. I'm still of the opinion the hard drive was inadvertently disconnected although it will never be admitted! Fox

Thanks Chrissie. I've installed Avast but now my fingerprint reader (loggin manager) isn't working. Can't seem to distinguish between different Proboards' sites. Hey Ho! Fox

Don't know anything about Fingerprint manager Foxy but just hope you completely got rid of AVG before installing avast - otherwise it will cause a conflict. Ah googled it & it does look like there are issues with fingerprint : - forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=62797.0
