I'm keeping my genesis attys in the hope that someone comes up with a better alternative wick.I'm sure it will happen some day soon and it would be Sod's law that if i sold my gennies a new breakthrough would be made.

It has been answered, but the clue was in the OP. Don't make your wicks black, it can make them too brittle and cracks the layer. No need to flame before rolling or quench. Heat to a cherry red and you wick should be a blue/grey colour, that is perfect. Going postal with blowtorches is half the problem.

I heard that rizla method from a guy who knows about these things. All you need do to the mesh is carbonize it so it doesn't make a short Must try....must try...maybe not....have spent too much lately

IMO it is a good idea to heat the wire, it gives you a bit more insulation at the points of contact on the wick

Heating the coil wire does nothing for insulation. It's for annealing it and takes the springiness out of the wire..Makes it easier to give it the form of a spring..

Ok, I realise i'm ignorant in these things, but aside from genesis style attys, what other kinds of attys use rebuildable wicks that are safe? When i say rebuildable, i dont refer to vivi's or semi rebuildables.

When i say rebuildable, i dont refer to vivi's or semi rebuildables. I think most if not all of the rebuildable attys should take all rebuildable wicks. I use the Pheonix, also called the A7 I think, after Roger showed me his. And I also got to see his pheonix

I have 2 now and the quality of the silica wick and coil which comes with it seems to be shocking. It's vapes very badly.
I've only done one mesh wick and just bent it slowly using a technique I saw on utube, just turning it constantly with your fingers and slowly bending the middle.
Before that I had a terrible time getting SS wicks to work on a genesis.
Now I've got a wick that works, I've stuck with it LOL and I've been using this one since early Dec 2012, recoiling often though. About every 3 or 4 days I've come down to now. To get the best from it, I think I should do it after 2 days hard vaping.
Next time I make a new wick, I'm going to look up on utube how it's supposed to be done, I think you cut the mesh at an angle.
I have to say (and I know I've said it often) the pheonix (A7) with a mesh wick is amazing, it beats anything else I've tied for flavour and reliability.
