I broke my determined plan not to buy any vaping things for a while today by ordering some replacement heads (Nova and V3/CE5) and thought I'd try out an Innokin dual coil clearomiser too.
Basically, I ran out of pre-made heads about a month ago (not including T3....) and since then have only been using homemade (or old). When I had a RDA I never got a great taste off it with silica wick and today was the final straw (for clearos) when I took two batteries and 3 clearos out on a morning's trip and couldn't get a decent taste off any of them. Just terrible.
I think I got the rewicking down to a fine art, not too tight, not too loose, perfectly spaced wraps, consistent 2.2/2.3 ohms....all spot on. But why such a bad taste? Yucky.....
So, I'm thinking about quitting the homemade and just buying....???

Personally, I think there's something wrong with the wick(s) I have. I always thought Silica didn't burn, but I held a fresh piece over a lighter flame the other night and it just glows red around the edges (the small furry strands) and then turns black.
Any thoughts?

Maybe you should rewick your clearos with mesh.

I'd say its your wick. I tried 4 lots of wick from 4 different vendors until I found one that was brilliant, no funny taste or anything like that whereas the other 3 I had all tasted nasty. Its also worth heating your wire up with a lighter so it glows orange for about second or two as that will burn off any residue. This is where I got the best wick I have tried from ukvapers.org/Thread-3mm-fg-wick-again

Silica wicks can have a funky taste until they get ' run in ' Djs . . . you could try boiling the wick in milk, that's said to absorb any funny tastes it may have. You could try Ekowool from ECW. Your taste buds may be off right now/ you've got tuned into the flavours you're using. Any, every or none of the above might apply.

They do some silica "rope" style, which gets good reviews......but you know me an trusting reviews?! (Hold on DJS, even you've got reviews on ecigwizard..... )

I will be giving that stuff a go at some point.

I'm with Perps, the silicon from ecigwizard is fab, you can flame it and it glows white hot without any burning. I believe it is the Russian braided Ekowool although it is only listed as silicon on the ecw web site. Second to none in my opinion

I always thought Silica didn't burn, but I held a fresh piece over a lighter flame the other night and it just glows red around the edges (the small furry strands) and then turns black.Any thoughts? holding any wick over a yellow lighter flame will turn it black mate, but it shouldn't turn black or bubble etc if you use a blue flame like from a mini blow torch. a new wick and coil will taste a bit funky for the first few puffs, after youve done the wick and coil you could drip a drop or 2 of e-liquid on to it and give it a few bursts of power, repeat a couple of times, then soak it 1 more time and replace it into your filled clearo... I've built 2 coils so far that had the same bad taste but didn't clear up after the usual first few puffs, the first time I realized that a couple of the coils were'nt actually making contact with the wick so make sure there is no space between the coils & wick, 2nd time I had used too much wick preventing the juice from getting inside to the coil. Are you sure? It's taken me over an hour to get the rubber bung in the bottom of a T3......it's enough stress to make me take up smoking..... couple of tips regarding that pesky rubber bung, push it out from the coil side with a kebab skewer or similar, dont yank it out too often with needle nose pliers cos the chunky ring on the end can split off putting it back in is a pain (this is much easier on the eVod too) but I've found it easier to lube it up a bit first with a drop of e-liquid then gently press it straight in holding it with tweezers (not from an angle)

Well after all that 1.5mm and 2.0mm are oos bummer..was going to get some more myself. Cloud9vaping will be stocking it soon too though btw I recommend the "2mm" for the T3/eVod it's actually 2mm deep and 3mm wide, been using it for a few days now and it's doing great without adding any extra bits of wick on top.

Cloud9 will probably charge £9.99 per cm lol. I've never bought from there simply because they are so expensive for the same things that can be got cheaper elsewhere. I'm gonna have a Google and see if I can find some somewhere in the world lol.
