Whilst the terms e-cigs and electronic cigarettes have become the norm for vaping devices, they in themselves are misnomas.
None of them are cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, roll-ups, or any other tobacco-containing product, and I believe we ought to get away from calling them such. They are PVDs (personal vaping devices) or ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery systems), the one thing they most definitely are not is cigarettes.
This is something that in my 6 months of vaping have come to feel rather strongly about, as just the name gives beurocrats, politicians, anti-smoking groups and the tobacco-hating elements of the general public something to get riled up about. As a side issue, I also hate the way "people" always seem to think that PVs ALL look like imitation fags, when this couldn't be further from the truth...
discuss.......

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a cigarette. What's e-cig? it is nor weed, nor paper, Nor smoke, nor ash, nor any other part Belonging to a fag. O, be some other name! What's in a name? that which we call a juice By any other name would smell as sweet; So e-cig would, were he not e-cig call'd, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. E-cig, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee Take some bloody acronym?
I don't think so.

I'm not a fan of calling them e-cigs but "PVDs" & "ENDS" aren't exactly catchy..
"hey honey, have you seen my electronic nicotine delivery system?"

"hey honey, have you seen my electronic nicotine delivery system?" and shortening it to "hey honey have you seen my ENDS" sounds even worse! However I do agree they should be called something other than electronic cigarettes and prefer PV. Although I too like Hifi's name for them!

Couldn't agree more. We no longer call ourselves a smoker, we say " i vape " therefore they should be called a pv ( or similar) we are all desperately trying to get accepted as non smokers and yet we use the term " e cigarettes " Doesn't really help our cause does it?

How do you reach potential new ecig users then if you don't associate what we do with cigarettes. ???
There's a huge percentage of new users who do start off their vaping journey using a cigalike . . . . because of that very fact.

Something however has to change to get the best for newbies and informed vapers alike. Somehow they need to be advertised in a different format. " Vape don't smoke " but finding one word to get this message across is the dilemma .

When I was stood at the counter of Tesco Express trying to buy my very first disposable, I asked the guy behind the counter for an "e cig" he looked at me with a confused look on his face, so I tried "electronic cigarette" then I resorted to pointing and a verbal description of their location near the regular cigs. I had exactly the same problem every time I went to get another. I know half the shop assistants I was talking to were smokers, I don't think that many non users are that aware of what they are or should be called, there is still time to promote new language for these.
Language is fundamental to our understanding of all things. That is what political correctness was always meant to be about, not the nonsense the tabloids tried to subvert it with. BTW the subverted Shakespeare above was making a similar point, the name is the important element, it contains the power to influence others, far more than the object/person itself.
Plato said that to control the masses he would write the music, perhaps someone with some talent for songs could come up with something to explain the language of vaping. Youtube would make a great venue for this.

Perhaps those nasty ugly cigalikes should remain as ecigs, as they are mostly what we see on a daily basis and are now sold by most vendors and supermarkets on the smoking counter, they are also what the first step into vaping for the majority of the population. I don't think I fancy shouting aloud 'has anyone seen my Penis' as a female foster carer this could get me in heaps of trouble My 'ends' isn't going to work too much better either I quite like PV although it's not overly catchy so there's certainly room for some serious thoughts on a name. I've been keen on moving away from the awful term 'electronic cigarette' for a long time, but have to admit it is something that most people recognise, most also know enough to know that it is a much healthier alternative to analogues. I often get comments such as 'you're using one of the electronic smoking thingies? They're much better for you than smoking.' Some people even as 'when did you stop smoking,' So I think in the mainstay that a lot of people realise what they are and what they do. i think it is the cigarette part of the name that causes some scaremongering, some people will always relate it to smoking for that very reason, good in the sense of someone moving over, bad in the sense of trying to get it widely accepted as safe.
