Hi. Unfortunately, all your interesting thoughts are wasted, since your ecig (I have one too) is incompatible with almost everything on the market. I no longer use mine. You have a tough decision to make. As you are off the cigarettes and enjoying vaping, maybe you'd have time to order some bargain kit from fast tech? Then you'd have two systems, which is what some jacvapour users ended up doing. It upsets me in some ways. Jacvapour are good guys, but the "fitting" business is depressing.

If you are that worried about silica then there are things you can do, boiling the wick will remove any loose fibres- you will need to do this after the wick has been cut to the required length. Then you can dry burn the wick to remove any excess sticky out bits In practise though I've found that once the wick is soaked in juice the chance of airborne particles is greatly reduced and once the wick has been used for a short period any loose and possible to become detached particles will have already done so. Try ekowool instead of silica, it isn't anywhere near as brittle.

Alo, new users will be very concerned when it comes to things they see, hear and read about e-cigs and quite rightly so.....if you don`t ask, you don`t find out
I hope seeing both sides of the coin has alleviated any concerns you had...I didn`t even read those threads, but do recall seeing the issue of silica fibres over the forums in the past....

Thanks for the links Alex.
My conclusion after scanning through them is that silica wicks are OK because they are made of amorphous rather than crystalline silica, and it is crystalline which is potentially damaging.
I rewick my own, and have been thinking of switching to ekowool anyway because people say the taste is better. I don't think this amounts to another reason for doing so, but maybe not having to read all that stuff does.

Giles
again thanks for the help. Had a look at the links you sent and the bauway atomiser and ego batteries look very promising indeed. Out of interest : how long do these atomisers last ? I am a pretty light vaper... i think i normally get through about one carto a day , sometimes less and i think thats about 1ml on the jacvapour set up maybe 0.9 If i run the ego batteries at a low voltage do you have any idea one of those atomisers may last? Thanks again for all your help.
Also as a side note: it seems there also concerns about stainless steel mesh now! the Russian guy who posted seems to think that prganic fibres are safest; but a lot of others are now saying that cotton bamboo etc if burnt give off carbon monoxide and carcinogens
It seems you can't really win either way . I suppose it is to be expected ; habitually inhaling any substance that isn't supposed to be in your body isn't going to be without risks . I suppose it's about making those risks as low as possible, and from my research so far the risks with vaping seem to significantly smaller than smoking cigarettes . But then there aren't many things which are as harmful as a full blown cigarette addiction.

Welcome to you Alex. A Bauway 306 atomiser should last you a good length of time, they're known for their longevity. Mine last for months although they are not my main day to day delivery systems. As much as I enjoy dripping, it isn't always the most convienent method of getting your nicotine fix. You may find the same. Personally, I wouldn't get too hung up on this silica wick business. A non issue can easily be over dramatized is my thinking. If you're getting a sore throat, which is quite common when folks first make a switch from cigarettes to vaping, try a slightly different technique from how you would smoke. Take a couple of draws, then hold the vapour in your mouth for a few seconds, before you inhale/exhale.

Perpetua , Hi
And thanks. Will get one of those bauway attys i think. The sore throat seems to come and go and may be just a symptom of smoking cessation, or any number of things i suppose. What does concern me are the microscope slides the fellow on the forum provided clearly showing shards of silica in exhaled. Sore throat or not, i don't really see how this is not a concern

Each to their own Alex . . . it doesn't concern me and I've no intention of discontinuing my use of silica wick. If you're that bothered, then do as Blakey in #16 suggests.

Hello Perpetua
Yes ,each to their own i agree . I really am not trying to be tendentious but why does it not bother you? I only ask because i don't really know anything about silica fragments - just that they are harmful, or maybe in some instances- and if you see a reason why this is not a cause for concern , I would like to know.

if you see a reason why this is not a cause for concern , I would like to know. Particles don't matter that much unless they a) stay in your lungs and b) damage them. Amorphous silica doesn't appear to do either. Total particle count for vapour is a tiny fraction of that for cigarettes. We all decide what we will worry about and what we won't, particularly when the risks are impossible to quantify. I look at evidence when it appears, but for the moment, for instance, I choose to worry more about the likelihood of the politicians banning this stuff than the chance the stuff will do me harm, because I think (though cannot prove) that being unable to vape is more likely to lead to an early death for me.

Hi Giles
thanks for the info once again. I agree vaping is undoubtedly a much safer option than cigarette smoking

Life's too short to get hung up on what may or may not happen . . . I smoked 40/50 cigarettes a day come the finish, for almost 4 decades Alex. Vaping in my mind is healthier for me than my cigarette habit was, be that using silica wick or otherwise. My only brother died suddenly at 44 of a smoking related disease, it's a life changing event as cliched as that sounds. Things that used to concern me, I realize were totally unimportant in the scheme of things. I'm not blase, but I am philosophical . . . none of us know what is around the corner for us in this life. I intend to enjoy what's left of mine without looking over my shoulder.
