bought some of this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290657103551?clk_rvr_id=503589852713 to try but am unsure if it safe for me use as is or if I should be soaking it in hot water first anyone know?

I believe there's nothing wrong with cotton as such - various people have tried it and prefer it to silica - but you don't know what the stuff you've bought may have on it. No reason to clean pesticides off candle wick, and they may have soaked it in something to clean it or make it burn better.

I'd boil it at least.

I tried this. All I got was a burnt taste. Really vile. It'll be me doing something wrong though. Lets know how you get on with it.

I looked into this before lordylordy and found that most commercial candle wick is impregnated with ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate to modify it's burning rate and prevent sooting.

The one you purchased looks as though it should be untreated as that's what the ad says, but it may be worth dropping them an email?

I've used unbleached, untreated organic type candle wick before basically sparked by fears over silica/fibreglass.

I boiled it beforehand. Kind of works but you really need to keep it wet and probably use high PG content liquids since it will burn. Don't use it anymore ... prefer ekowool

So has anyone got any links on where to purchase quality cotton wick?

I have been using 100% cotton wool pleat from my bathroom, I got it to work once. It was lovely but a pain to use because its all furry and breaks apart to easy.

I bought some from the seller Lordylordy linked to timbo . . . you've to keep it really, really wet for it to be any good and not burn.

Medical gauze is another fabric that's supposed to be quite good. Although like Ash I prefer Ekowool now.

haven't tried the candle wick yet as all my drippers were re-wicked just before the candle wick arrived will try it out over the weekend will post my opinion on this in a few days

I want to make sure I get the right stuff with no bad chemicals :-)

I've bought from this Seller, it's an unbleached/unwaxed cotton wick, they stock it in a variety of sizes timbo.

It's untreated timbo so you should be good to go . . . if you do get a ' taste ' ( I didn't ) then you could always wash it then.

I don't tend to make work for myself though unless it's absolutely necessary.

Perpetua I have just received the wick you recommended, I installed it on my Octopus Rda but having a bit of trouble.

Problem I am having is the wick does not soak any liquid up, in fact it does the opposite and just slides off.

Any tips of getting the wick to soak up properly?

I was very surprised by the result!

Give it a hot wash in that case timbo . . . it may have some dressing in it.
