I was talking to a colleague yesterday who said that her train company have now officially banned e-cigs to the same extent as normal cigs. I thought I'd check my own train line's official policy and found this. It was a very welcome sight!
"It’s not permitted to smoke a lit cigarette on our network, including our trains, ticket halls and platforms.
However, customers who wish to use an electronic cigarette, which is neither lit nor discharges actual smoke, are welcome to do so.
These e-cigarettes can look like ‘real’ cigarettes so it’s expected that customers using them may need to explain this to other passengers or staff members if questioned."

Be careful though - I believe they're not allowed in the stations. Can anyone confirm that? Also if anyone's heard anything about Tube stations (I have a crafty puff at the end of my station of a morning, but it's an open air one).

I think people need to stop being so paranoid. So what if they see?, and if they send the anti-terror squad even better, at-least it gives you a day off work and a perfect opportunity to humiliate the state over their insane OTT reactions.

I use my e-cig on the platform and on the train. However, I do use a little SD keyring during the day, which emits very little vape. I don't want to cause anyone any discomfort or worry and until I see someone else in my carriage also using an e-cig I will be discreet. BUT I have printed a copy of the policy out and keep it in my bag. If anyone actually did confront me about it I will very politely point out that I'm doing nothing wrong and certainly nothing that could cause them any harm. I can just imagine their faces if I was there with my vamo, puffing away like Thomas the Tank Engine

This article from the Standard in August suggests they have yet to make a decision on e-cigs on the tube... link

yeah, the larger mods would probably bring unwanted attention..... mainly from the good'ol'rozzers. I was asked once If I was smoking by the police who then insisted on dismantling it and proving it was just ejuice and not said substance. hehe my reaction was, I would be a darn sight more merrier if it was said substance lol. They laughed and we parted separate ways.

I am retired, and only use the train about once a month. I use the train to transport me and my bicycle to different areas, so I can bike on unfamiliar roads for a change. The train company is East midland trains. Last time I asked a staff member, vaping was allowed, and that was about six months ago. I was challenged once by a fellow passenger and accused of smoking. I explained that I was vaping, not smoking, and offered to stop if it bothered him. Although he was a bit grumpy, he said I could carry on as far as he was concerned, so I did. E cig was am Ego with Ce4.

Interesting. But annoying. Of all people they should be allowed (stuck underground all day).
