I started making my own coils for my protank tonight - I'm please to report a nearly 100% success rate! Super-Shiny would be proud of me, I sort-of followed his instructions to a tee - 4 coils of 0.2 kathnal around 0.2 ekowool using Greigster's coiling buddy gives me 2 ohm heads every time. I'm vaping on one right now - so far no leaks, no shorts and plumes of Vapor! Sorry for the shameless brag thread, but I'm fairly pleased with myself, it will save me a fortune (or at least give me more money to spend on other shinies )

It's good to coil. Could be the start of your RBA journey. It was for me.
Well done.

Thanks - I've been vapingy with it for about half an hour, and I've started getting a slightly dry hit/chemical flavour. I can't tell if it's the coil or the juice - the juice was fresh through the door today from t-juice (strawberri).
I noticed a slight discolouration in the rubber bung when I dismantled it - could it be melting the rubber? Is it possible I've over-trimmed the wick? It's likely to be the juice is in need of steeping a bit, but I wanted to check if anyone has had these problems and knows an easy fix that a novice like me would miss!

I always as a rule when re-coiling/wicking give the coil/wick a dry burn to burn of any impurities from the coil/wick, it also helps on burning any rubber taste that the rubber bung might have (it's a settling in period)

My own preference for the Kanger range is 2.5mm silica. No need for flavour wicks as it sits perfectly in the slots in the head. No leaks, gurgles etc. I would also recommend pre made res/no res wires as you wont burn the silicon seal. (that's how Mr Kanger does them if you check one out)

Are you making the coil and then sliding in the wick?
Any wicks on top? (I bought some 1mm and have been using 2 of these in all sorts....)
I'm going to try using pre-made wires, I bought a job lot for the RH Iatty and reckon I could do a Protank with them.

djs - No, I'm coiling onto the ekowool using the coil buddy - the wool sits on the drill bit and I wrap around it before sliding the drill bit out. I haven't put any wicks on top, we'll see if I need them when I try them out with some red astaire, it's 80/20. The ekowool seems nice and thick though, much thicker than the factory made silica.

ionian Great news Simon, that your coils are turning out well. The advice from Rommers and Jim is sound.

The bad taste has gone - I think it was, as romelee said, just wearing in. I dry burned the last few that I put together, so hopefully will have less of an issue with them. I'll keep you updated on potential leaks, and add some res/no res wire to my next shopping order

Well done, isn't it a great feeling? I had little success at all until the coil buddy arrived and now have about 90% success. Lots more practice still required though!

Well done - no better feeling than vaping on one of your own recoiled heads!! I use a small diameter needle to wrap my coils, and I have now done so many that they turn out at about 2.0 ohms every time. Don't worry, they will get better with each one you do until you can almost do them in your sleep. This was said to me when I first started, and I really didn't believe people, but I do now!!
