Received my 2mm ecowool, 2mm silica and 0.2 kanthal today. Had a go at recoiling 2 evov heads tonight and failed miserably, tried to follow the videos but on testing I to 0 ohmson both occasions Morepractice requiredme thinks, on the positive side I have 20 metres of kanthal to play with.

Greg- this is the video I followed : Tow important things that I learnt as a novice tonight - keep the coil as small and tight as possible, and make sure it doesn't touch the sides when you put it in the unit. A pair of needle nose tweezers are invaluable for this. Good luck!

The problem I have is with the well-known-to-me taste of hot metal. I get it nearly all the time.
I re-set up the Iatty last night - and there is was, hot coil taste again. Horrible.
Anyhow, I placed two strands of wick above the ceramic cup/coil arrangement. They are just about staying in there I think. Bad taste gone. I have come to the conclusion that wires too loose (not wrapped tight) leaves glowing coil without juice. (i.e. dry hit)
The best flavour ones were all produced wrapping the coil around a "bit" (in my case a nail) and sliding the wick in.

Thanks for h tips.

I can't recommend the coil buddy enough for this - you can use it with silica or ekowool, and it give you something nice and thin to coil around as well as holding your wire tight, allowing you to get a really close coil. It's worth the £7 and then some!

Had another go tonight, from reading another thread I'm sure I'm coiling too tightly so rather than using a paper clip splint I used a 1.5 mm drill in the ekowool and then coiled 5 turns of 0.2 around that. Tested bit still only getting 0.9 ohms, I'm beginning to think my kanthal is thicker than its labelled, or maybe I'm just useless Taking direction from another coiling newbie thread I thought I'd have a go at a microcoil even though I only had 2mm silica and 0.2 kanthal. I did pick up some tweezers and a blowtorch on the way home tonight. So following a microcoil video I've made my first successful coil using 12 wraps around a 1.5 mm drill then threading a 2mm silica wick through the coil plus two silica taste wick strands on top. Tested at 1.4 ohms and give it a whirl on my Evod in Evod head and mvp2, mmmmm lovely taste And not a hint of burning although the Evod was getting a little warmer than usual. Tried swapping the coil into my protank but head threads wouldn't fit, it appears I have a couple of coil heads with suspect threads that fit the Evod but not the PT. other heads are interchangeable. So all in all I'm we'll chuffed. I guess at 1.4 ohm it will run my Evod battery down quicker but I'll see how that goes. So how so I use cotton wool in the microcoil for an Evod or protank ? On the microcoil video I watched wool was used but it looked like a wool thread, similar to silica in appearance so not sure how to insert cotton wool of how much to use ?

Microcoiled my protank also to 1.4 ohms and JJ black gold tastes fantastic, not of hint of burnt taste and ramped up to 11 watts. Flavour is so much deeper, well pleased. Off to hunt down how to use cotton wool on YouTube

Nice one Greg - ironic that the "recoiling success" thread ended in failure, but the "recoiling failure" thread ended in success! I'm going to do an order later today and get some different gauge wire, I'll have another go soon.

I think i may have found my problem with my original coils, I think I've been supplied with 0.3 kanthal even though it's marked .2 on the reel, admittedly just with a black marker pen. I snipped off 10 cm of my wire and it measures 2 ohms in line the vape mesh website spec of 20 ohms/metre for 0.3.
At least i know I'm not going mad, I've just fitted a 13 wrap microcoil to my protank and that's coming out at 1.5 ohms, does sound correct for 0.3 kanthal ?
I also double checked the wire from an old original Evod coil and it's definitely much thinner wire than my allegedly 0.2 kanthal.

Thanks Romelee, great to hear one of the gurus assuring me I'm not going mad. I'm loving the microcoils, and so is the other half as of this morning. I can also turn the heating down a little as she can warm her hands on the Evod now
