Dont be tempted to go for these lazer pointers on FT. The power rating is 200mw, the legal limit for these used to be approx 5mw in the UK, this strength can certainly NOT be bought over the counter in the UK. If pointed into the eye accidentally could very well cause blindness. On the plus side, FT makes you produce a credit card to pay for these, Paypal isnt an option. This kind of thing is often bought as a toy for kids, they are interesting on foggy nights etc, you can see the beam for many miles. I dont think this one is powerful enough to pop balloons. Dont be tempted, very dangerous.
Laser Safety
The light emitted from these devices has been set according to IEC60825. However, staring into the beam, whether directly or indirectly, must be avoided. IEC60825 classifies laser products into three different catagories depending on light emitted, wavelength, and eye safety.
Class II
Caution - visible laser light less than 1.0mW. Considered eye safe; normal exposure to this type of beam will not cause permanent damage to the retina.
Class IIIR
Danger - visible laser light between 1.0mW and 5.0mW. Considered eye safe with caution; focusing of this light into the eye could cause permanent damage to the retina.
Class IIIB
Danger - infrared (IR), and high power visible laser light greater than 5.0mW. Considered dangerous to the eye; any exposure will cause permanent damage to the retina.
N.B. It is important to note that while complying with these classifications that, unless otherwise stated, our laser diode products are not certified and are designed solely for OEM use. The way in which the device is used in the final product may alter its original design classification. It is the responsibility of the OEM to ensure compliance with the relevant standards.
The lazer above is 200mw and is CLASS IIIB It is printed on the label.

It's bad enough when kids have them on the bus in London shining cars down on the streets below imagine if they had these!

There is half a page of different ones on "New Arrivals" at FT and only a couple of them are considerred okay in most countries Griff , but they will ALL cause temporary disablement of vision at the very least. There have been many reports of these being shone into airplane and helicopter windscreens, including a Police helicopter attending the scene of the recent disaster in Glasgow.

There is nothing stopping any fool from buying a laser of any power apart from the cost and technical knowledge. They are perfectly legal to buy, own and use. The way you use it could become illegal or set you up for a law suit.
I work with lasers in entertainment.

Which is the correct use of lasers but we all know if kids saw for this price they would be jumping all over it and talking parents who are not paying attention into buying one. As we all know there are parents out there who don't always pay attention that's why there are shows like Jeremy Kyle etc

I had a time when I was into my lazers. I used to have a green one which I could write on black dvd cases with, pop ballons and even light a cig.
The main reason I bought it was simply because it's beam was visible even in daylight whereas my previous ones needed a dense air or smoke to be seen.

Great fun with cats, they go nuts chasing the point of light all over the place, people who point them at other people are idiots.

That's not good. Whatever next? AK-47 Kalashnikov clone. I'm waiting for an automatic shotgun with an extended clip and armour piercing rounds plus silencer clone comes out. Hell, even if I get to unload one clip before it breaks, I will be able to get rid of most of the crows which nest around here in spring.
