Thanks so much for your response as I have also been considering ordering a microcoil where i would just need to change the wick but not sure if the coil itself is worth the amount charged based on how long it will last

It isn't so hard to make your own microcoils Mrsmac If you have a gas hob and flat-headed tweezers then all you really need is the wire. You should be able to find something to wrap it round. I use .28 kanthal, which I got from stealthvape.

Mrsmac how did you get cotton wool through the standard protank coil? I am reaching desperation here I tried re-wicking using silica, it was hit and miss, some there was no taste, and some were really tight draw, not sure if I used too much top wick. I wanted to try cotton wool, but the coil is soooo tiny, I cant get it through. My tastebuds have gone on holiday again, happens 3 weekly lol. My hands cramp up so it is difficult for me anyhow, but I can't get anywhere near with the cotton wool that I wanted to try so much.

Hi Sammy, what i found easiest for me was to take a pinch of cotton. I posted somewhere that on my first attempt i was getting no flavour, so i retwisted a peice of cotton wool and left out the top wick, instant hit! i can only assume i was over generous on the top wick! i think some people use one and some dont. When rolling, what i done was after estimating my piece mainly rolled the end tighter than the middle in order to thread it through, it is fiddly, but dont give up, keep trying! Maybe invest in a magnifyer of some sort of if your phone has an app for one that could help. Be patient with yourself, if i can do it, anyone can!

I've done it. I was trying to use way too much cotton wool. This time I got a thinner piece, but quite long, I rolled a length of it longer than the coil really tight and wet it, I got that through the coil then slowly pulled the fluffy bit through. So far it's working perfectly.

Thats the way sammy13 don't do them too tight though or you will get dry hits because the juice can't soak in properly, what i do is roll it thinner to a point to thread through & gently pull through until you start to feel resistance then trim the cw very slightly more than needed at thicker side, pull very very gently on thinner side again then trim off excess both sides & fit chimney back on then fluff up cw wick each side with a tiny screwdriver or pin or something.

Very impressed that you have had success re-wicking an existing coil! I re-wick microcoils on a regular basis, but removing the silica from a Protank for example must be a PITA. The cotton wool wick is much better at the job of course, but does need to be changed more regularly.

I've managed this quite a few times, a couple have leaked, not sure if that is not enough cotton wool, or due to no top wick, as I wouldn't know where to start with that. The difference in flavour is immense, but I'm guessing you can only do it once with each coil as I do not dry burn.
