Theoretically speaking of course!
I have an Evod starter kit which is nice and simple and well priced.
Not looking to spend a fortune but is there something that comes recommended for the nearly absolute beginner which gives a good vape, flavour and is simple to use?
As I said this is entirely theoretical ;-)

Are you wanting to learn to build coils yourself or are you looking for something that takes prebuilt ones like the evod?

Hoping Mr Smith will start doing the coils soon but probably something I can buy premade for now but probably with the potential to be fussed with if I can convince Mr Smith to do them!

Julie based on your criteria I'd go for this myepack.co.uk/itaste-vv-v3-o.htmlMy wife uses these and likes them. Great price and you get 5 attys so you can try plenty of different juices, they're top coils so will give a slightly warmer vape than your Evod.

If your going down the coiling route then the iclears in my link aren't the best for recoiling but once you get into coiling you can buy a mini protank 2 or davide which use the same heads as evods and they'll work great on the itaste vw battery in the link

Are you looking at the battery or the clearomiser here?
If clearo, I like the Aspire BDC range for dual coil action. Cheaper than the equivalent Protank also, but then the PT does look nicer in my opinion. I also prefer the vape off the BDC over the PT3 though. Of course, neither are particularly great if you are wanting to go down the route of rebuilding at some stage.
As above, the vv v3 if it's the battery your looking at replacing. Or the MVP is also a nice step up.

I agree with Greg on the itaste vv - maybe with a protank 2 with the airflow controller - yep I know - I am just a fan of that

Is there anything about the evod kit that is not working well for you? Eg battery life, want to try tank cracking juices, lack of flavour, tank capacity etc

Aerotank or Aspire BDC with a spinner. This was my first upgrade both have nice flavour. I'm now on Kayfun's and Taifuns on MVP and Vamo with a couple of drippers and Stingray and Nemesis on the way. Does the upgrading ever end I'm running out of space in the cupboard. I still use my Aerotank and spinner for work though.

If you like the Evod style there is a V2 glass. Solves the tank cracker problem and is bottom dual coil, and you can change the drip tips.
If you like the evod batteries have you tried the Evod VV 1000 mah? Nice intro to VV...
I have just ordered both as a step up from just an ego battery with a Ce4.
I want an aerotank already though and a mod lol.
