sainsbury ban

Just popped into my nearest sainsburys local as I like it for the friendly staff, and good prices (******) and horrified to see a sign on the door (well near it) saying not only are cigarettes banned but also personal vaporisers (e-cigs) as is Sainsbury's policy

Now as far as I'm aware the only connection with cigarettes to e-cigs is that they contain nicotine and that they produce vapour which may be mistaken for smoke. There's no combustion, nothing and would you stop me from using a medical device for a medical condition just because it produced vapour?

Seems that rather than being innovative and current Sainsburys is just being backward and following the herd.

What is even worse that whilst not even the staff can use them on the premises you sell ineffective , over priced Generation 1 (cigalike) devices. I've been vaping 3 years and none of my vaporisers look like cigarettes. They may look like sonic screwdrivers or a medical device or even a camera but not like a traditional cigarette.

Also may I point out that a lot of e-cigs are not waterproof and would you really want one of your staff to have an exploding e-cig just because they had been forced out 'in the rain' due to your policy? that is the potential hazard you face e-cigs are like iphones, they don't like water!!!

Hence I would appreciate a full and frank reason behind this backward policy and also for it to be reversed.

like most places they put the word "nicotine" in their policy they think its radio active im sure of it...
the company i work for did and banned it on the shop floor but bad mistake of saying all nicotine delivery systems are banned!!!so does that mean patches,gum,nic spray etc?

while I applaud your efforts - it bothers me that you should suggest an ecig becomes explosive in the rain.
the worst that could happen is frying the board in a regulated mod, the battery is at no risk of meltdown.

Hate to seem negative, but why can't people refrain from vaping in places like supermarkets? It's not so hard to go without for half an hour or so. If you can't make it, have a little stealth vape hiding in the clothes isles, or ask the service counter to look after your shopping and go outside.

E-cigs are not recognised as medical devices, even if they are, i'm not sure they wouldn't want them being used in full view in the meat isle.. I know watching someone inject insulin while holding a pack of mince would make me feel a bit off.

I'm not really getting what your problem is.

thanks for that info. I always thought e-cigs might explode in the rain....it has been a concern of mine for a number of years

I know that vaping is harmless to third parties and hopefully ourselves, however I do think that there are places where I think vaping is inapropiate shops/supermarkets fall into this catogory, as do reasteraunts, bars without asking for approval, public transport etc etc.

I recently was told on a P&O ferry that it was company policy that I could only vape in smoking areas or in my cabin, the staff member who informed me of this told me it was due to smokers complaints, FFS!

However stupid that is I think we need to be mindful of other peoples feelings.

while I admit (an am I hasten to add) thoughtful of other people .. the rebel in me thinks .. if they don't like it can we break the rules ??? thats just me though

I agree , in certain places vaping , just like ciggies shouldn't be allowed . I also have never felt such a strong urge to vape or even smoke whilst shopping so really don't mind if such places say ' no vaping ' also we shouldn't be writing about the dangers of ecigs exploding in the rain to large companies without at least checking to see if that's the case.

A bit of an own goal in my opinion we have a tough time in certain tabloids and don't want to add fuel to the fire..

Whilst I do not feel it appropriate to vape in a supermarket myself I can't see how Sainsbury's is not being hypocritical here. On the one hand they're forcing their staff outside to vape yet they are selling e-cigs (albeit cigalikes) on their premises. They need to make up their minds, either they're for them or against them, and if against then don't sell them.

I realise that supermarkets also sell cigarettes (well I think they still do in the UK) however the banning of cigarettes in enclosed public places is the law of the land, e-cigs are not (as yet!!)

B&Q sell paint but I doubt they'd be best pleased if I started painting their walls.

As a general comment I realise we are all pro vaping here but we should also be considerate whether they are ignorant of the technology or not.
It shouldn't be assumed just because it's not illegal to vape you have the right to do it wherever you want.
