This is looking like the north/south divide then?
Advantage south of Sunderland, fipronil products north!
Might also be too cold up here for them?

We only treat our Beardie if we see or suspect fleas.
We use Frontline spray, we use this as it doesn't soak into the skin or go into the bloodstream. We also use R.I.P from the vets to treat the house, we do this even if we see no fleas just incase.
We use Neem oil all year round, just soak the collar with it and then wipe the excess off & also rub a tiny amount on her back legs.
This may sound a little OTT but at 5 months our Beardie had a terrible reaction to the puppy vaccines & developed Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia & cannot be vaccinated, we have a 'Titer Test' done every year to check her immunity against the majors just for peace of mind really. We're very reluctant to give her any unnecessary drugs if there's any possible alternative.
Heard lots of people on the dog forum my Wife uses saying they're switching between flea treatments as their regular brand is no longer effective.

Frontline has been ineffective for a couple of years now, vets are still issueing it if they have a stock to clear, Advantage is the best of the spot on treatments at the moment.
Trust me I own a cattery

The breeder we got our dog from said crush a fresh clove of garlic in there food a couple of times a week. My dog is over 8 years old now, never had any fleas. She said when the dog cleans it self (licks etc) the smell/taste of garlic will stop any fleas latching on. may be an old wife's tale, but it works of us.

We have been using frontline for years with differing results. I've just been on the vetuk website looks like they have sold out of advantage for large cats. So I've just ordered there own brand i'll give it a go and report back. Turns out the store is just down the road from me.

Q i have both the cat and dog size advantage packs here and they do have to same % of imidacloprid and butylhydroxytoluene. The quantity to be used works out at 0.1 ml per kg. Chrissie have you done you cats this way yet?

Onions / Garlic / Leeks in large amounts can cause anemia in dogs. We steer clear of these completely for obvious reasons.

If advantage can strip the colour off a leather sofa, why on earth would you put it on your dog or cat? Vets bread and butter is vacs and flea/worm treatments so they will push these on you at every opportunity. There are plenty of natural flea and worming treatments to try out, google is your friend, also check out canine health concern - what the vets don’t tell you about vaccines. You don’t vaccinate kids annually for life, why do it with dogs.

Until our dog had a serious health issue we just went along with what the vet suggested, same as we have with our previous dogs & probably the same as most other pet owners. We never thought of looking for alternatives until we were forced to.

I would happily not treat until the animals actually had fleas but ticks are a real nuisance around here and can make animals and humans very ill so in the summer months I treat mine every month with the one fred uses

If advantage can strip the colour off a leather sofa, why on earth would you put it on your dog or cat? We didn't know it would do it until one day.. We treated our terrible twosome as normal and as a rule dont let them on the furniture but our dotty started doing her rub thing after putting it on dashed into the living room and rubbed the sofa not thinking anything of it but two days later large patches had lightened..we didn't put two and two together till we spoke to vet and he said it was the flea stuff
