Thays the one. does the meter beep when you touch the probes together? It should.

It allows quick continuity tests so you don't have to look at the meter.

One probe on the threads of the m/stick where the switch screws in the other on the outside of the 510. You should get 0.1

Pepperty yes Cousin Itt is referring to the drunken stick woman, quite apt for all that vodka last night
Best just stay on 200 setting, I only use drunken stick women when I can't see properly due to contorted positions

As Ripshod says , your meter should beep if you touch the leads together. Touch one end of your circuit with one lead. the other end with the other lead. no beep no circuit

I can't see the logic of that one as the brass ring with grooves for button is not connected to anything else except the anoxidised body (which isnt supposed to conduct? is it..)

It's probably dodgy meter leads pep rather than the meter itself. Leaving the meter on 200 whip your leads out then short the two meter connectors you just removed the probes from with a stretched out paperclip or even a piece of kanthal, you should get a steady close to zero reading if meter is ok.
