Thanks Leo, but it isn't a case of just reducing the text I can do that, but when I am playing Scrabble game ( a facebook app) the screen is not 'locked,' when I move my mouse with it? Never happened with my other laptop as the screen the page, this one doesn't. If I reduce the text size I can't read it properly, their appears to be no happy medium. As an example, there are 36 words in the 1st line of this message and it is all on one line! This cannot be right. Sorry, don't use fb so can't really help with that. But as you access it through a web browser I wouldn't be surprised if there was a browser setting that could help. If the forum text is very small you might have changed zoom level. It might be an idea to try a different browser. If you normally use Internet Explorer then try Chrome, Firefox or Opera, and see how your fb apps look.

Well I don't know what happened behind the scenes of the searches I have been making, but I switched on again this afternoon and all my niggles have been sorted, the text has returned to normal the screen is stable and the correct size, I can increase the size of the text when I need to. I was searching all sorts of stuff but not changing anything, don't know if it is I.E ,Chrome or Lenova, but I am very pleased with it. Fingers crossed, I am now ready to learn more about this Win8.1.

I am new to this OS , and as their are a lot of differences from win.7 , I thought it might be helpful not only for me but for other users, to have a dedicated thread. If you have any helpful hints, tips please post here. whats happening Phoenix best thing you can do with windows 8 is uninstall it an go back to windowz 7 which is a proper beasting OS not filled with bloat and junk like windows 8 which is so incompatible it hardly workz with nething peace

leo. I have had a notification that my Startisback trial period is up and I should activate again? I thought this was free not a trial. What should I do so I don't mess up my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you uninstall the startisback program-thing? Windows 8.1 isn't that bad. I've had it 7 weeks and have just worked out how to get on the internet!! What about Classic Shell instead?

Phoenix . - a quick check online shows that this is not a totally free program. It has a free 30 day no limitation trial, after which it will require you to purchase an license and activate the full version again Quoted from the faq section of there website : "Trial, licensing and activation How trial version works? There are no limitations in trial version. After installing it runs for 30 days. If you don't activate it with license number you bought within 30 days, it will still work, but in limited mode: Start Menu will be blank and non-customizable; every boot you'll be nagged about evaluation period over. Trial period runs for each user which have installed StartIsBack on one PC separately." On the bright side there appears to be a few other free programs that achieve the same kind of thing ie. a start button and menu like the good old days of XP and win 7, or you could relent and pay for a license which is only $2.99. Personally I just made myself get used to the new layout in win 8 (now 8.1) but its not for everyone. I couldn't even say which of the alternatives are any good, but i'm sure someone on here must have tried a few of them out. Hope you get it sorted.

Phoenix ., - I'm sorry I didn't make it clear that what you started with was a trial period (I'm relieved that I did say it wasn't freeware though). As charliehorse said, there are others (go back to my and the rest of the folks posts at the start of the thread). Try Classic Shell again, following the instructions leo posted earlier, having first picked it up from www.fosshub.com/Classic-Shell.html/ClassicShellSetup_4_1_0.exeAlternatively, pay the pennies, I guess.

Thanks tomj777, I don't mind paying such a small fee but I can't find how to do it, do I have to download it again? I don't remember seeing an option to buy when I first did it.

Well done.
I'm quite in favour of paying little bits for software created by an individual / small groups... Same as when I can afford to go to small independent shops rather than the ubiquitous Super Market.

Santa came early for me...... no longer am I trying to keep online via a 5year old Dell netbook with a ropey power connector I'm now the proud owner of a Lenovo 3in1 C series, not a bad system for the price, considering we got it from QVC It does mean I'd best get used to windows 8 and quick! I'd be tearing my hair out if I was still running my websites and doing video/audio/photo manipulating but as its just for new browsing I'm OK trailing around the internet and only really need my photoshop and office programmes so i'm slowly remembering which downloads I like to have to hand and fishing them out, plus I have Google Chrome so it keeps my bookmarks and passwords to hand for me The only issue I have is that I'm now sitting at desk with my nose almost on screen, its like surround vision and its creepy! I've gone from 9 inch to 19 and a half inch -- and I cant get any further away as my desk is slim
