One thing to add is that if you are joining wires make a good mechanical connection first solder should never be used to hold things together. Twist or wrap the wires so the make a solid join before soldering. page 2page 3page 4

I hope it looks as neat as this inside when you're done. Infact this one is so neat it makes a decent wiring diagram.

Unless your experienced at soldering I wouldnt bother, im getting so stressed out with this. And I dont know where im going wrong, ive got the 510 positive soldered, that was easy! The battery connects ive ripped apart at least 5 times because it was a S**T join and/or I melted the wires insulation. Ive watched every soldering video there is, ive cleanned my tip, tinned my tip, thrown my tip across the kitchen in a paddy! My solders not melting properly yet the bloody plastic on the wire is. Argh someone please ffs tell me where im going wrong!

When I was trying to solder my Vamo board in an old tobacco tin, I couldn't get the solder to sit on the tip. it was just melt into a ball and stay on the strand of solder. From what I read, my tip was dirty etc... but no amount of cleaning would fix it lol.
I found a good tip to fix this. When the tip is cold, Starting at the base of the tip, wrap solder all around it, so it eventually gets to the top, it will look like a conical microcoil at the end of your soldering iron lol. Now plug it in and let it melt. Wipe off excess on damp sponge and now the solder will flow onto the tip :-)
Oh and dont forget to add some solder to the wires before you try and solder them together. It make it much easier to get a good join. Also flux can make this much easier.

ok im a ruff git just to be clear but i love gas powered soldering irons if you get a good one you will to and the kits start at around£25 at b&q dont get one that lights buy its self if you have kids to clean them when no wet sponge is around stab the tip throw a cardboard box when it is hot (it works wounders lol) the other good thing is they can be used as a mini blow torch for the bigger joins(can heat up thicker wire before the insulation melts) i tend to find more heat fixs most probs but see 1st line of post
