The top of the battery looks like the battery sled might have shorted the battery at the +ve end. I think some PTC fuses would be a good idea next time, between both battery +ve will also protect against the batteries being out of balance and the massive current that can produce when they try to equalise. Like this.

I would seriously consider getting a heat sink for the mosfet, it is usual to use one at high currents, that is what the hole at the top is for, screwing onto a heatsink or the chassis, just sayin ...

O.O looks like you got an arch across something. If its staying closed then you probably took out your resistor. It kinda amazing how much abuse a mosfet can take and still work.
I woke up one morning not long ago and grabbed my little box mod. Half asleep eyes squinting I threw in a battery in the wrong direction since it was a parallel build. 2 seconds later I had a fireball in my hand and it blew off all the solder joints on the negative side of the batteries.

Have to say I'm loving this thread.
My ambitions to build my own box has been on hold for an eternity.
Got a soldering iron for my birthday (Which is in May) And I still haven't taken it out of the box.
Not content with soldering for the first time I am also wanting to make a wooden box.
Stay tuned in the New Year as there will probably be blood as I do woodwork for the first time, followed by burning as I lose my soldering virginity and toast my fingertips.
It may not be working yet Steve but it's still inspiring so don't give in.

P-Ch Mosfets with lower internal resistance: FDD3706/FDU3706 (lowest resistance) and FDS6576 i think are the mofsets you are looking for and im not 100%but you might need a 47k resistor as well
