A young guy of 27, smoker of 60-80 fags a day, works for my husband, ended up with a collapsed lung a few weeks ago. Doctors at the hospital told him he's gotta give up smoking and where was he as soon as he was discharged from the hospital, yeah at a bar drinking and smoking. You'd think he would learn his lesson wouldn't you I tried to get him over to e-cigs a while ago but he didn't take to them Just 27 years old and already had a collapsed lung

That's so not good But maybe it could be worth trying again to get him to give vaping a go?

At 27 I put enough s**t through my body to knock a cow out...you feel invincible, age and life experience tells you otherwise.
Thing is it could be unrelated to smoking but if you do smoke and the word "lung" is on any report the doctors don't want to know. My mother is having lung problems at 70, never smoked, they are doing every test under the sun. If she was a smoker they would jst told her to give up and go home, another ticked off the list.
Although 60-80 is damm excessive though.

I would say he has a problem, and probably not just physical.
This is the sort of smoker that the 'clean living' and 'holier-than-thou community' would say are not entitled to free NHS treatment and should pay.
There was a lady on Radio 4 just this very weekend saying all smokers should pay for any treatment of any sort. She said non-smoking people who got cancer should be treated for free, but those who bring it on themselves deserve it.
It makes me so angry. Smokers pay more than their fair share in tax/duty, more than they cost the NHS.
If all the non-smokers out there want to lobby the government to remove duty on tobacco and make smokers pay for private health care... bring it on. It would be cheaper for those very same smokers if they got fags for £1.50 and put the other £7 into health care. In fact by the end of the year, they could not only buy the most expensive health care package, but they could also take a 2-week holiday to Ibiza.
whoops... small rant...

We all know the perfect sense it makes to not smoke/ drink to excess/overeat . . . but unless you really want to get control over any addiction, there's very little that's going to stop you carrying on with it - despite the best guidance.
I always think of George Best, given a second chance that some would say he squandered.
It's easier said than done if you're not in the right place in your head.

I guess many of us are in that camp. I may not be smoking, but I am digesting the same amount if not more of nicotine, and other substances. But I put it down to damage limitation. I may be addicted to nicotine, but I'm not addicted to all the other stuff in smoke. I'm 24 hours away from 3 weeks without a regular cigarette. And in all that time I can say I haven't wanted or needed one. So give him another chance and give him the guidance to a decent vaping machine. My e-lectron may not be the best, but it's way better than the ones I tried and failed with 4 years ago. This time it worked and stuck. Now I'm addicted to Fastech. But at least that's only harmful to my wallet. Not my health as well.

Bobsbeer - I'm certainly in that camp with you Bob. I gave up tobacco well over 2 years ago, and haven't felt as fit as I do now for many years. Sure, I'm still addicted to nicotine, although not to the same degree as I was before, and I have lowered it significantly in the intervening time, but I'm still addicted. As you rightly say, it's not the nicotine that does the damage but all the other cr@p in tobacco. I was listening to our local BBC radio station last week and the presenter was waffling on about the dangers of vaping. I emailed him after the programme finished with some details and links. He was on again after the article mentioned above had been discussed, and talking to a vaper who phoned in, I was relieved to hear him say that whilst vaping was not officially recognised by NICE, at least it was safer than tobacco smoking, and that nicotine was not the carcinogenic element of cigarettes. He must have read the email!! I don't reckon that I'm spending any more on vaping than I did on tobacco, especially as my wife now vapes not smokes too, but at least we are both healthier, if not wealthier

Probably nothing to do with smoking, i know a guy that runs triathlons and has never smoked, collapsed a lung turning over in bed and another that did it trying to twist a cage in Tesco. The 25-35 age is the optimum range for males to suffer collapsed lungs.

some people just dont like accepting help So true. I have a numpty round the corner I've pretty much given up trying to help - worries about less benefit; government cuts (even though they may not affect him) - expects the state to do everything for him. Then when they don't do as he wants says 'it's their fault'.....so refuses to get better (but then he has borderline personality disorder. It can be treated but it's not easy for folk with it to accept the 'help' because it's not 'their' idea or even stick at stuff they've tried. So they get in debt and all many of ills and then don't get out of debt. Took me years of constant battling to get out of debt but I just didn't stop doing it for long). You can only sigh and pray....sorry to say that but tis true.... and yes I also heard the girl on Radio 4 djs and hated her so I switched it off and went shopping

That's so not good But maybe it could be worth trying again to get him to give vaping a go? No, he sort of justifies himself for giving up the e-cig by saying that he's heard bad things about the e-cig, that they're no good for you. As if smoking is He tells me to give up and go back to smoking

toots If you were even in Edinbubble I would come and assault him with my VTR!!! It would be so worth it.. Not to worry, I've converted someone else and he's picking up one of my spare itaste vv/vw, a spare mini protank and 2 bottles of juice I've just made up for him, red astaire & ice menthol to get him going And this guy is also a youngster, only about 19 I think, maybe 20, he also works for my husband. I think the collapsed lung of his colleague has scared him enough to give up the smokes
