I must admit to a lot of confusion to the whole cotton pad , Muji Cotton and Koh Gen do that seems to be flying about and clever use of the phrase "Japanese cotton".
So , could some kind person please clear this up for me and the community as I think it would help.
I have some of what the company describes as "100% Pure Cotton Japanese Wicking Pads" , but when I have cut off a piece and try to roll it between my fingers , it's an absolute swine.Even before I start to roll the cut piece , it looks as though it has a thicker top then nice cotton then thick middle then nice cotton then thick bottom. Also it's a bright white colour. Having seen people like Phil Busardo and Rip Trippers roll their pad so easily , makes me think I don't quite have the genuine article.I am going to have a look at the cotton that I have in the Subtank and Subtank Mini's boxes to see how they compare.

Just as a very quick and my first look at a site kind of update.
I've just looked at a site that I have ordered from before that has 3 different , or at least different in description , price and amount and yet when I looked at the photo's close up , they are the SAME picture ! Not really a good first impression from a person that is now looking at the differences.
While I have been typing I have just re-wicked my Subtank and I have found out why the pad looks thicker ( after it's been cut ).The scissors seem to crush the cotton pad while it's being cut and the scissors I'm using are supposed to be sharp as they are hair cutting scissors. After it's been cut I seem to find it very difficult to roll the cotton in an even way even after having cut the cotton to different widths. Also the cotton does seem to snag a bit going through the coil , it doesn't seem to behave in the same way that the reviewers seem to be able to get it and this is with both the cotton pads I got with some Kanthal and the cotton I got with the Subtank and Subtank Mini.Yet , I never seem to have these types of problems with cotton balls where I have to pull and roll a piece of my own , go figure ??
Do I need some different scissors , or is this crushing that seems to have , going to happen no matter what scissors I use ?

Montana Andy do you remove the top and bottom layer from the pad first, you should be if you are not, it is very thin and more tightly bonded than the rest of the pad. I find I use more than I would with cotton wool and less than rayon, but cotton is far from my ADV so YMMV and put more weight on advise from others.

I don't remove the top and bottom, but pull the pad apart into two pieces. I find leaving the top/bottom on makes it easier to work with, it also doubles the amount of pads you have. This may not be how others like doing, but it works for me. Wicking seems to be just right, but, as above YMMV. I have only used the Muji brand.

I have Muji and have used the top layer (don't like waste) rolled like a swiss roll in a Kayfun, but it doesn't work in everything.

I don't separate the top layer, just split the pad in two, so you get the more tightly bonded part with a nice layer of 'fluffy' on top of that. Always cut along the long edge, with the grain/weave, wet finger tips and just roll a small way along (enough to go through the coil) I find the rest eases through the coil easily then. This is the way I like to do it, I'm not saying it's the 'correct way' , but, it works for me. Used like this in KFL, Erl (full and mini) Lemo, drippers and this way seems to work really well in Kanger heads (PT/Evod type) Someone else may have a better way of using it, interested to hear of any other ways, I'll try anything once!!

I separate all the layers in each pad and use them all. That four layers per pad. Always cut with the grain as you say but only AFTER separating. Otherwise you will get compacted bits. As always use much less than you think. One layer at about 2 centimetres wide is more than enough for me.

Found this video on Youtube abot different cottons, its 47minuts ffs! So I only have way through it. I would say skip to 20minutes in where he starts to talk about the different flavours from each type of cotton. Scratch that for 5 minutes he just seems to be burning them all So skip to 25minutes

I have removed the top and bottom layers which seem quite thick and dense. Now it seems to roll like the videos I've seen.I also made sure that I cut the cotton WITH the grain. All in all I haven't noticed a tremendous difference in taste , but , it does wick a lot better , as I was getting dry hits on a bad day. Andy
