No they ask in an attempt to ensure your not posting anything your not supposed to in relation to their rules which isn't unreasonable to be fair.
if was only about insurance then they'd only ask you the value

my post office only once asked if the liquid is inflammable - typical non vaper - lol - fortunately I know the lad and just said : think ! if it was every time I vape there would be an explosion - now they don't ask anymore

When I had to send my sig 50 back for replacement as soon as "ecig" was mentioned they refused to post it my wife had to explain it was just the mod which was a metal box with electronics in it no battery involved only then would they accept it but would not insure it. If it was international postage I might get it but postage within the UK is a bit OTT.

They started asking when the new regulations regarding dangerous substances and goods were introduced. There is a list of prohibited items, and they are supposed to ensure that nothing prohibited is being mailed. This does NOT give them the right to ask what is inside your parcel.

If I'm asked what's in a parcel I just say "Nothing from the prohibited list" and that seems to satisfy them.

Exactly this!  They do not have the right to make you tell them what is inside the parcel and i suspect that they should be asking "Does your package contain any of the following..." rather than "what is in it".

About 6 months ago i was asked this from a really nosy
PO worker. Whats in the package she asked suspiciously.
I replied anal beads,butt plugs and nipple clamps. Now she
just asks me whats the value.

You should have said secondhand before anal beads etc 

shes he's is such a stuck up cow in the post office I will have to try something similar, she's always on the phone to a friend and its a big effort to serve you,

My response is always. There is nothing in the parcel that is on the prohibited list.

Why should they know what's in the parcel?
