very interested in cloud chasing with an Atlantis (or a clone from FT!) and wondering what the alternatives to the Aspire Sub Ohm battery are.
In two years of Vaping I've only progressed as far as Spinner IIs but I've ordered an MVP for everyday use but I'd also like something to try out the cloud chasing and I'm aware of the opinion that the Aspire sub ohm is for those not brave enough to go for a mod.
I'd consider a mech mod at this point but I'm vaguely aware it would need the right protection built in due to the high wattages involved.
Any suggestions?

There can't be a lot of sub ohm "fat eGo" batteries, but the Joyetech eGo ONE is the same sort of thing really. (I think).
You could of course use a mechanical mod - are there safety fuses for high watt mechs?
Personally, I wouldn't give it another thought. A mech + a good battery (obviously) + factory made coils (not homemade) is safe enough for me, but not 100% safe if you see what I mean.
I thought about this exact set-up, (sub ohm plus Atlantis) but am happy with the Kanger STs.

Joyetech eGo One is a sub ohm battery Smokjoy Cfiber is another although it it is variable voltage/wattage.
But if you want to jump into the sub ohm game on a budget i would suggest getting one of the numerous iStick 30w clones that are on the market, they can be had for between £15 and £20 and are much more versatile than any of the tube style batteries. Couple it with a Smok VCT tank, a very good performing tank and the cheapest on the market too at £15.

At about £20 from Fasttech for the battery and £8 for an Atlantis Clone it almost sounds like the most cost effective way forward is the Aspire gear. I have about 20 18650 batteries I've harvested from laptop and other battery packs which I'm sure in the fullness of time I'll put to use in a mod of some sort ( the Vamo V10 can go to 50W so could drive an Atlantis??) but for now I like the convenience of a chargeable mod like the MVP or the Aspire sub ohm. That being the case my FASTTECH basket has the aforementioned products plus extra heads and a mini Nautilus clone ready for me to pull the trigger when my vape budget allows. I've also decided today I need a new 3 wood so golf might take precedence over Vaping for now - sorry to all the non-golfing capers out there!!!

Ditch the laptop batteries, they're usually the dangerous variety if you want to go low. Better with sony vtc3, 4 or 5's or samsung 20 or 25R's.
I run these down below 0.1 on a regular basis and they've been well tested in the cloud chasing scene. Also made with safer chemistry that doesn't explode, just tends to fizz out instead.
Another option for mechanical is a parallel box mod, two batteries sharing the ohms.
So if you take say a coil at 0.08ohms and add 4.2V that's about 60 amps or so, a sony vtc can do 30 amp continuous so two in one box means you can basically hold the switch till they're flat. Wouldn't suggest trying it but yeh, pretty safe.
Also these batteries have fairly high pulse rates, means they can handle say 10 seconds of 60 60-80 amps or so at a time. That's what we're interested in when it comes to vaping. How they handle pulse at low ohms.

Thanks Get Off My Cloud and enjay for the excellent advice. For around the £30 mark these mods are a great alternative to the sub ohm battery giving much greater flexibility and performance. Plus when the battery reaches the end of it's useful life you pop it out and replace it - the Aspire battery goes straight in the bin and you're out another £20 for a new one! Would you guys recommend or discourage charging the battery in one of these mods vs in a separate charger?

I've never had a problem with onboard chargers not working but i mostly use a separate charger just for convenience. I have this one link i just wait until i have 4 batteries that need charging and charge them all at once so i have a constant supply of fully charged batteries. There is a 2 bay version too link. Like i said never had a problem with charging in the mod it's just you're tied to the wall or a computer while it's charging and that could take several hours, much less hassle to just throw a fresh battery in and charge at your convenience.

The batteries I have are Sanyo 18650s from a very reputable computer manufacturer but aside from that I know nothing about them so I guess for the sake of a few squid I'll buy some new and keep the others for torch use etc. Just noticed this rather tidy looking device - Smok XPro M80 - wish I hadn't ordered my MVP2 now....

muckyboy I wouldn't advise using reclaimed batteries for any vaping these days, certainly not for sub-ohming. Doesn't matter who made the laptop. As this is your first foray into sub-ohms you can't get much better than the Aspire, it'll protect you from shorts and over-discharging your battery. Great for learning with, you don't want to jump in at the deep end. The XPro M80 is a great 80Watt mod, especially for the price it is. This is despite the TC not working on it. The MVP2 is a great mod, but I feel you'll be a little let down by it, doesn't quite have the oomph for subbing below 0.8 ohms. I'm a cloud chaser myself, not through choice I just wanted flavour. But I haven't gone overboard with the kit. Just a Smok M65 with the Smok VCT tank at 0.5ohms and I'm satisfied - FULLY! Any of the available of-the-shelf sub-ohm kit will give the result you're looking for, if used in the right way. Great deal on FT for batteries atm, 4 Samsungs or 2 Samsungs, or even 2 Sonys.

I agree with Ripshod, I have about a few reclaimed laptop batteries (Sony & Sanyo) that I only use in USB power packs (8 out of 30 were OK, 5-6 were 50% and the rest were not worth charging, they charge OK but can't supply much more than a trickle) and more importantly they are all ICR less safe chemistry low current batteries. You could use good ones in 10 W regulated devices with good battery protection, but I wouldn't go above that.

Just noticed this rather tidy looking device - Smok XPro M80 - wish I hadn't ordered my MVP2 now.... Don't think that! The Smok might have a little more grunt, but isn't in the same league for build quality. MVP 2s are bulletproof and even if you go on to buy a higher powered device, you'll have a great hassle-free mod as back-up. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards
