You can cut a bit of pencil rubber to jam between the wide parts of the reel, but I prefer to just drill a load of 1 - 2 mm holes around the edge to thread the end through. For those ridiculous sewing machine bobbins that VM Co sell wire on I get a paper clip and put the small bent end through the centre and loop the rest to go aroung the reel and thread teh end through the first loop.

Elastic band or drill numerous holes around the side and poke the loose end through. NB. If you're really lazy like me then use a soldering iron to make the holes, suffer the smell

I put a wire off the reel across the posts of an atty and fire it til hot, then melt the edge or the reel at intervals, where I anchor the wire. Little grooves all round the reel, every inch or so.
If you do this on the bottom of the reel (not with label) it works well.
You might need to make the outer edge of the *cut* wider for ease, but I have no problems this way.
Hope that helps.

...I go the easy route, i save up all the postmans chunky elastic bands and wrap twice around spool and shove wire tail between the pair I'm not innovative enough to set up some of these great thread ideas

Yep had it happen a couple of times so I drilled holes in the reel like many seem to. Then while putting magnets on my mod door I noticed them sticking to a reel I had on the bench so started using one to trap the loose end. Stealth Vape now offer the option of a magnet on the reels they sell. The bobbins that VapingBad mentioned are a pita, don't order from them anymore and got so fed up with them and the crinkly wire I cut my losses and chucked them

Wrap an elastic band round them. You can still pull off what you need without it unraveling everywhere, without removing the band.

Bit of selotape cut to about 5mm wide. Bit of paper 5 mm x the height of the spool. Paper in the middle of the tape so the wire doesn't get sticky, stick the selotape to the spool. 1 for a small spool, 2 or 3 for a big spool.
