Safety Concerns

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but I can't seem to find it. I have one or two niggling worries and would welcome your views.

It concerns the safety information sent out by the wonderful VapeEscape with regards to E-Liquid. Two points in particular.

1) Toxic if swallowed.

2) Very toxic in contact with the skin.

Now. I'm sure most of us have overfilled from time to time and ended up getting liquid in the mush. And, if you have fat fingers like I do, well, this can be messy stuff! My poor old fingers have certainly come in to contact with small quantities of E-Liquid, I just find it impossible to avoid.

Are my fingers going to fall off? Am I going to turn green and glow in the dark? Should I be using rubber gloves? How serious a hazzard is this stuff?

What do we know ??? ?

VC, I have been vaping for over 2 years and I have spilled it, got it on my hands, swallowed it, got it in my eye (that burns) and I'm still alive.

It's nicotine in it's pure form (100%) that's dangerous and fatal if it comes in contact with skin or swallowed. The nicotine in e-juice is diluted and not harmful. I wouldn't recommend drinking it, but I'm sure that you already know that. lol

A few drops on your hands from time to time are really not going to hurt you Mazz . . . should you decide to start drinking or bathing in the stuff, in an undiluted form, then that's another matter.

Like Jerry, I've had it on my skin and in my mouth and am still alive to tell the tale.

Although it always makes good sense to not leave juice lying around where children or pets could have access to it.

I think, and I could well be corrected the way I'm going at the minute, that the dangers with getting it on your skin are basically that if you get a really large amount of strong juice on your skin, you can overdose more easily than by vaping it, nicotine is absorbed through the skin. And when vaping it, if you begin to overdose, you will feel the effects first, and possibly pass out before it gets to lethal levels, whereas if you have dangerous amounts on your skin, and feel faint, and pass out without washing it off, it remains on your skin, and continues to be absorbed, so you continue to overdose.

Is that why they consider skin contact dangerous?

By the way, I get it in my mouth all the time, some of it tastes delicious, sometimes I don't even rinse I'm still alive. Although I don't think I should recommend anyone else do that, you never know what tolerance levels you will have.

The information on the bottle and safety leaflets is Regulatory and should be on or accompany all e-liquid.

But, just like the warnings on many household products, it's just basic common sense worded to get noticed.

I always wash my hands before and after handling any e-liquids and all surfaces are wiped down as well. A couple of drops on the skin are not going to do any serious damage (unless you are handling high strength bases).

However, e-liquid in the eye is very unpleasant which is a good enough reason to always wash your hands regularly when using it.

Some excellent answers there folks - thanks for your input. I shall stick to Radox and limit myself to two pints maximum if I'm driving and try not to worry so much .

This makes me realise I had better be a bit more careful, every time I fill a carto I use a paper hankie to wipe up any spilt liquid and to blow through but then just keep said hanky for use next time, and so it must be getting rather full of nicotine after a few days ( filling them up about twice a day) so I should use them as they are meant - disposable and throw it away after each use, I am a tight scot who hates waste

Have you thought about using said hanky for a few weeks and then stuffing in to a cart and vaping it?

I do the same thing Prep, but now I tear a bit off and use that then throw it away.

All of the proprietary 'cessation' products available from the chemist contain nicotine - they are taken either by direct contact with the skin (patches) or orally (sprays, gum, lozenges) and to date don't appear to have harmed anyone - using ready-mixed e-liquid from a reputable source seems to be proving safe also; I've heard of no one being harmed by its use. Putting tobacco into ones mouth, setting fire to it and breathing in the resulting chemical-ridden smoke is still deemed to be legal even though we're told it's killing us.

So far I admit not lost much e-liquid, the condom method really works well for me, and yes the hankies do smell nice ( especially after wiping any of the vanilla tabac) am amazed as my hands tend to be rather clumsy these days, but must be the scots meaness in me not wanting to waste any.
