The reason for micro coils (touching coils) is just an issue of space. Thin wire heats up faster than thick wire. If you want high ohms (say 1.8ohms), and you have thick wire (say 0.4mm), to fit the number of wraps on the deck gets tricky. So having them touching takes less space. But you would need much higher watts to get it warm enough. So, getting the right size wire (thin for high ohms, thick for low) allows you to use less wraps. Between 5-10 wraps is about what you should aim for. Thin wire (under 0.28) is not easy to wrap on a Kuro style jig. For learning how to use one you need thicker wire, or you will get frustrated. The art of them is the pressure you (don't) apply while twisting. If you get one you will find that helpful.

I need one of those lol, being messing with subtank mini's for a few weeks using .25 kanthal, tried 2mm microcoils - not bad 3mm microcoils - not bad either the best result for me is 3mm but not compressed so spaced and japanese cotton, this is using 50/50 juice which is a tad thicker so seems to suit the spacing and I have been using solely microcoils for over a year now.
Works for me, might be crap for you

I'm going to try a few variations but this sounds like similar to what I would go for. The spacing just sounds like the better idea for letting vapour vent into the chimney for my sucking delight

Just experiment smokin100516, it's the only real way to learn what suits you and your atties. Once you find a coil you like stick to it.

My first attempt. I'm going to buy a magnifying glass and a light I think, my eyes just aren't what they were since I turned 40 How do I make it straight? Is it because it was too loose or do I need to to heat it up and pinch? To be fair I haven't got a clue

Lovely job smokin100516Yes heat and squeeze/shape with tweezers and it will retain the shape when cooled.. the magnifying lamp is a crucial bit of kit this end also.. others have suggested buying el cheapo reading glasses 2x and 3x for magnifying what your working on, as i need that level of correction already not much use to me ..

Thanks phatfil Good to know I'm not the only one who needs a magnifying glass I've wicked it and it seems ok just lacking in flavour compared to the stock OCC. (it seems to be wicking but not enough, time to try again) Oh and I went for 1.5 and got 1.2 so I need an extra wrap next time.

To be fair I haven't got a clue Looks great to me, smokin100516, plus thanks for mentioning about the magnifying light; need to be able to see really well for coiling, as I'm noticing too! Using the coiling kit will ensure you have a perfectly round coil. I saw a vid on youtube where the guy removed the coil, then turned it around, put it back on the coiler and pushed down on the coil again, to tidy it up. I do that, plus hold the coil in the coiler and top, using plyers to straighten the legs. Can get a great butane lighter on Amazon; Coney.
